ASHOK KUMAR MALHOTRA SEVA (COMPASSIONATE SERVICE) SCHOLARSHIP
HUGH & JULIE O’TOOLE ’87 SCHOLARSHIP IN MEMORY OF ERIN O’TOOLE
TUCKER FAMILY SCHOLARSHIP Samuel Afriyie ’16
The impact of my scholarships… All of the great experiences I have had at Oneonta are because of my scholarships. Receiving these awards has not only helped me afford my tuition, but has also served as a reminder to give back when I become a graduate of our great institution.
My best experience so far… Being a student researcher and attending professional conferences. During my freshman year, one of my professors told me about the New York African Studies Association conference and encouraged me to submit a paper for it. I worked with my peer mentor and another student to write a paper on gender roles in post-colonial West Africa and present it at the conference. Coming from Ghana, I thought I knew about the topic, but I actually learned a lot that I didn’t know. I met a number of incredible people at the conference and secured an internship at the United Nations Non-Governmental Organization sector of The Foundation Center in New York City.
What I am involved in… I am a member of the Student Association Activities Council, Multi-cultural Student Council, SUNY Oneonta Peer Mentor Program, Educational Opportunity Program, Alpha Phi Omega service fraternity, Students of Color Coalition, and Center for Multicultural Experiences.
What the future holds for me… I want to travel and do human rights and volunteer work. I’m also thinking about going to law school, for international law, or graduate school, for African or Middle Eastern studies.
