network Service problem?

If you are having problems with your networked computer or other device, we will do our best to help you. There are some things, however, that you can do to help us help you.

Most problems manifest themselves and become apparent to you as "slowness". There are a series of questions that will help narrow down the source of your problem, and determine whether there's an issue with the network or not.

  • How long have you been experiencing this slowness?
  • If you are using the wireless network, is it only slow in certain places?
  • Have you tried using the machine in a totally different place, like the library?
  • Have you run a speed test to see what the speed of your connection is?
  • What were the values returned by the speed test?
  • Have you tried the same machine on the wired network?
  • Has someone else (your roommate?) had a similar problem in the same location?
  • Is it only slow at certain times, like peak hours of 9 PM to 1 AM?
  • Is it only slow going to certain websites?

In that case of wireless problems, we have some very powerful tools to analyze your service quality over a period of time in all the different locations you have been using it. This allows us to isolate the cause of a problem, either as RF (radio-frequencey) interference from your environment, a problem with your device, or poor signal quality in some specific location.

If your connection to the network completely failed, we will want to know when was the last time it was working properly, and what may have changed since then - new installed software, something physical happening to the computer (suspected virus, dropped on the floor, something spilled on it), or anything else unusual.

These are the kind of questions a Help Desk Associate or a Network Technician may ask you. They might recommend bringing the computer in to the Help Desk to have it looked at. If Networking does some analysis and determines that there may be a problem in your room, they will schedule an onsite visit with you to gather more information and come up with a solution to your problem.
