College Honors

Upon graduation, a College at Oneonta honors degree may be awarded to students who complete 60 semester hours of Oneonta course work, including 45 graded (A-E) hours.  Courses taken pass/fail are not counted in the 45 graded hour requirement.

Three categories of honors degrees are:

Cum laude

GPA of 3.50-3.69

Magna cum laude

GPA of 3.70-3.89

Summa cum laude

GPA of 3.90-4.00

A degree with honors in an academic area is awarded to students who have completed at least 24 s.h. of course work at the College with a minimum 3.5 GPA, if recommended by the department concerned. Transfer students must complete 18 s.h. in the major at the College at Oneonta and maintain a 3.5 GPA or better for department honors. Students may not qualify for department honors in an academic area for which they have not registered as a major.

For students enrolled in an Elementary Education Program, Education is considered the major academic area. For students enrolled in a Secondary Education Program, the academic field (Biology, Business Economics, Chemistry, Earth Sciences, English, Foreign Language, Human Ecology, Mathematics, Physics, Social Science) is considered the major academic area.

A student with two major academic areas may qualify for honors in both areas.
