MACHINIST

The SUNY College at Oneonta is accepting applications for the position of Machinist. This position performs skilled machine shop work in operating and maintaining lathes, drill presses, milling machines, and other machine tools in the construction and repair of metal parts, tools, and fixtures.

Job Requirements: Working knowledge of machine shop methods, materials, tools and equipment; working knowledge of the mathematics of the machinist trade; ability to weld – stick, TIG and MIG; working knowledge of the physical characteristics of commonly used metals and alloys; ability to plan and lay out work; ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions; ability to stand for long periods of time and do moderately heavy lifting; as assigned the ability to train and supervise others; and ability to read, interpret and work from plans, drawings and specifications.

Minimum Qualifications: Four years of full-time experience under a journey-level machinist (defined as someone who performs skilled machine shop work to construct and repair metal parts, tools, and fixtures by operating and maintaining lathes, drill presses, milling machines, and other machine tools and may also produce tools, dies, gauges and special guiding and holding devices) which provided training equivalent to that gained in an apprenticeship program; apprentice training in the machinist trade or training gained by the completion of technical courses in the machinist trade in a school, institute, or branch of the armed services may be substituted for the above training and experience on a year-for-year basis.
