#1: Tropical
Storm Ida…
Tropical Storm Ida is expected
to make landfall along the Mississippi/Alabama border early Tuesday
morning as a tropical storm with maximum sustained winds 50-60 mph. The National Hurricane Center has
issued Tropical Storm Warnings from the eastern Louisiana coast all the
way through Apalachee Bay, Florida. Although the system is situated over
very warm waters, certainly waters more than warm enough to produce
Category 4 or 5 hurricanes; Tropical Storm Ida has to contend with
increased levels of vertical wind shear.
The reason for this increased shear is an upper level trough that
is now interacting with Ida. With
this interaction come stronger upper level winds. Strong upper level winds act to disrupt
the thunderstorm complexes that make up the system and in essence “tears
them apart”. The biggest threat
with Ida will be heavy rain across much of Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia
and northern Florida for the next few days. Some locations can expect several
inches of rain easily. After
Thursday, Ida should finally move out to sea and no longer be a threat to
the United States.
