Women’s and Gender Studies
inquires, in a concrete way, women’s and men’s roles and, in a theoretical
vein, about methods of interpreting and explaining the differences in gendered
lives. Women’s and Gender
Studies is an interdisciplinary field which challenges
conventional theories about human nature and behavior which are largely
rooted in a male, white, heterosexual experience. Feminist perspectives
place gender
at the center of human study, offering alternative views of research and social theories,
reframing dominant disciplines, thereby opening
up new areas of study. The Women’s and Gender Studies
minor will enable students to develop a core of information supportive of a
major in an academic disciplines, and opening new areas of study.
The Women’s
and Gender Studies minor is open to all undergraduates. It is recommended
that interested
students register their intent to complete the minor. Information can be
obtained in the Women’s
and Gender Studies Department office (Milne 315, phone 436-2014). The
Chairperson has responsibility for final certification of completion of
requirements.

Internships: Recognizing that Women's and Gender Studies minors need the opportunity to obtain paraprofessional work experience the Department offers an internship course option. Recent students have interned with Planned Parenthood of Otsego County, Rape Crisis, the Violence Intervention Program, Phoebe: Gender & Cultural Critiques (publishing), and New York State Coalition Against Domestic Violence (lobbying/advocacy) and the Gender & Sexuality Center. Opportunities in business and government also exist.
Career Opportunities: Most graduates in Women's and Gender Studies eventually work in four areas: social services, education, business, or government. Experience and knowledge of gender and issues of diversity are also an asset for individuals working in mass media, publishing, advertising, and personnel. Teaching and social service are fields most closely associated with Women's and Gender Studies, areas of improving employment prospects. Many of our graduates have gone on to obtain MSWs, MBAs, Ph.D.s and law degrees, and to fulfilling careers as lawyers, therapists, teachers, social service administrators, and editors.
