Hang On Through the Holidays
Some of us have noticed that through the holidays with parties, cookies and opportunities to over eat, many of us gain weight that we wish we had not. If you are concerned about those extra pounds, you might want to try these eight tips to avoid holiday overeating:
*Use a smaller plate.
*Drink a big glass of water before your meal.
*Serve yourself modest portions of your favorite foods, and savor the aroma and flavors.
*Eat slowly; it takes about 20 minutes for your stomach to signal your brain that you’ve had enough to eat.
*Don’t go back for seconds; save the leftovers for another day or give them away.
*Try to serve yourself; don’t let someone else load your plate.
*At parties, take small tastes rather than full portions. (Also, if you know you are going
to a party, eat a little less at other meals that day.)
Food for thought: When you eat “good carbs” –carbohydrates that are not processed and that contain fair amounts of fiber-your body sugar gradually increases and insulin is released from the pancreas to allow body cells to use the sugar for energy. When you eat “bad carbs”-carbohydrates that are refined or processed-sugar surges into your bloodstream and insulin is released rapidly, causing the sugar to be stored in muscles and fat cells. High levels of insulin in the blood can lead to a variety of biochemical processes that set the stage for diabetes and heart disease, as well as a rapid return to a hunger state.
