The State University of New York College at Oneonta invites nominations and applications for the position of provost and vice president of academic affairs. Oneonta is one of the most selective SUNY institutions, with some 12,000 applicants for 1,100 places in the first-year class and an acceptance rate of 45%. With an enrollment of approximately 6,000 students, the institution features small classes and a high level of student engagement in undergraduate research, community service, and student activities. Primarily an undergraduate institution, the college offers graduate programs in selected areas of study.
Reporting to the president, the provost and vice president of academic affairs provides leadership for the college's academic programs and supporting administrative offices. S/he is responsible for ensuring the integrity of all academic programs through program development, review, and assessment as well as coordinating academic programs and policies with SUNY system leadership. Direct reports to the provost include two associate provosts, the director of the library, and the deans of the five schools: Arts and Humanities, Economics and Business, Education and Human Ecology, Natural and Mathematical Sciences, and Social Science.
A key member of the President's Cabinet, the provost works as part of a team to set the overall direction of the college including academic initiatives within the recently completed strategic plan. S/he provides academic and professional leadership with the deans and faculty in an environment of shared governance and collective bargaining. The provost maintains and fosters a climate of collegiality and an environment that is conducive to learning, research, creative activity, and continuous growth for faculty and students.
Opportunities for the New Provost
Oneonta’s 2015 Strategic Plan, entitled "Scholarship, Service, Strength," is focused on student success. The provost will have the opportunity to work with the campus community to align resources to support student success, to develop and update academic programs to make them more attractive to new students, and to support hands-on applied learning with the goal of balancing liberal arts and career preparation throughout the curriculum. In addition, the provost will provide leadership in the maintenance and renewal of institutional accreditation with the Middle States Commission on Higher Education as well as professional accreditations with AACSB, CAEP, CADE, NASM, and other bodies. Oneonta's energetic and engaged faculty presents an opportunity for the new provost to expand the use of innovative pedagogy, increase applied and service learning and to promote faculty and student scholarship and creative activity.
