Advanced students also have the opportunity to serve as Teaching
Assistants. TAs typically are students who have taken a course, done well in it, and been invited by the faculty menber to serve as a teaching assistant for the course in a subsequent semester. TAs work with the course instructor to help in the classroom, help prepare materials for class, and offer out-of-class assistance to students in the course through through tutoring, group study sessions, or examination review sessions.
Serving as a teaching assistant can be a very valuable educational experience. Becoming a TA allows you to work closely with an individual faculty member, enhancea your knowledge of the subject, and lets you see the educational process from a different perspective. Students who serve as TAs receive course credit. Serving as a TA can enhance your credentials when it comes time to apply for a job or apply for graduate school.
Interested students are encouraged to talk to professors about the possiblity of serving as a teaching assistant. Before doing so, please read the college-wide requirements for serving as a teaching assistant and be sure you meet the prerequisites.
