Research Possibilities

Advanced students have the opportunity to become involved in research with faculty members. Individual students may conduct research under the supervision of a faculty member, or students may work as members of a research team helping with a faculty research program. Students may carry out this research across multiple semesters, and for varying amounts of academic credit.

Being actively involved in ongoing professional research is an extremely valuable way to enhance a student's professional training, can help a student solidify career goals, and can be a significant advantage if the student later decides to apply to graduate school even in areas of psychology that are not research-related. In most years, several advanced students make professional presentations on their research at regional or national conferences.

Students interested in becoming involved in research should discuss opportunities with their academic advisor or with any faculty member in the department.

Registering

Normally, students who conduct research register PSYC 299, Independent Study in Psychology, or PSYC 399, Independent Study in Psychology. Each of these courses may be taken for from 1-3 credits, and each may be taken more than once. For course prerequisites, see the College Catalog. These courses require instructor's permission, so be sure to discuss this with the faculty member who may serve as your research advisor. You should work with your research advisor to complete the Application for Independent Study, which must be submitted to the registrar's office to register for the course.
