The Psychology Department
at the State University College at Oneonta has programs designed to
meet the needs of several different types of students.
1. For majors planning to go to graduate
school to become professional psychologists:
The Psychology Major provides
students with all of the essential courses and all of the additional
support services necessary to give them thorough preparation for graduate
schools. Many are accepted into high quality graduate programs
in Psychology, and many choose graduate programs in related fields such
as Counseling or Social Work. In addition to traditional courses,
many of these students avail themselves of the opportunities to do independent
research, to work with a professor on an ongoing research project, to
serve as a teaching assistant, or to do an internship relevant to their
area of interest.
2. For majors planning to use
the psychology degree for entry directly into other vocations:
These Psychology Majors are given a theoretical background
in psychology with some degree of specialization relevant to their vocational
choice. They receive training in statistics and in research methods
which are applicable in a wide variety of careers, and they have opportunities
to do internships related to numerous potential jobs. Many students also
become proficient in the use of computers.
While it is not required that Psychology Majors graduate
with a Minor, many do obtain Minors in areas most relevant to their potential
career choices. These include Minors in Business and Administration,
Sociology and Social Work, Child Development, and Communications, as
well as numerous others.
3. For non-majors who take from
one to several courses in psychology:
These non-majors acquire a perspective
of psychology as a science and depending upon which of many electives
they choose, they learn about many of the applications of psychology
to specialized areas of interest.
The Department offers both the Bachelor of Arts
and the Bachelor of Science Degrees
