The information below is offered to assist students in planning their academic programs. Please note that the information on this website is not the official statement of program requirements, which is contained in the college catalog.

TOTAL CREDIT HOURS IN PSYCHOLOGY COURSES:

Students who choose to major in psychology must have
A TOTAL OF 34 SEMESTER HOURS of psychology courses.

These will include the following:
(all courses are 3 credit hour unless otherwise indicated)

Six Required Courses:

PSYC 100 Introductory Psychology
STAT 101 Statistics
PSYC 220 Introduction to Psychological Research (4 credit hours)
PSYC 240 Developmental Psychology
PSYC 260 Introduction to Social Psychology
PSYC 270 Personality Theory

 Area Requirement:  (One course is required from the following list)

PSYC 230 Primate Behavior
PSYC 231 Cognitive Psychology
PSYC 232 Sensation and Perception
PSYC 233 Psychology of Memory
PSYC 234 Psychology of Learning
PSYC 324 Physiological Psychology *
PSYC 326 Comparative Psychology *

* PSYC 324 and 326 may count for both "Area" and "300 Level" requirements; but each counts only once for required credit hours in Psychology.

300 Level Requirement:  (Two of the following 300 level courses are required)

PSYC 301 History and Systems in Psychology
PSYC 310 Statistics in Psychology II
PSYC 322 Advanced Research in Psychology
PSYC 324 Physiological Psychology * 
PSYC 326 Comparative Psychology * 
PSYC 335 Behavior Modification
PSYC 345 Psychology of Adulthood and Aging 
PSYC 360 Advanced Topics in Social Psychology 
PSYC 365 Applied Social Psychology  
PSYC 373 Psychotherapy and Behavior Change
PSYC 374 Abnormal Psychology
PSYC 398 Senior Seminar
PSYC 399 Independent Study in Psychology

Psychology Electives:

Approximately 15 additional Psychology Courses are offered, mostly at the 200 level.  These include courses in Advertising, Sleep and Dreams, Human Sexuality, Groups (e.g. cults), Industrial/Organizational Psychology, Psychology of Women, Alcohol and Drugs, and Environmental Psychology, as well as a Psychology Careers Seminar, Internships, Teaching and Research Assistantships, and Independent Study.  See the college catalog and departmental announcements for a complete list of courses. Selections from these and from previously listed courses must total at least 34 hours of Psychology Credit.

Related Coursework from Other Departments:

Psychology Majors are required to select 15 hours of courses from lists including Mathematics, Statistics, Computers, Language Arts, and Cultural Diversity.  These selections will also satisfy General Education Requirements applicable to all majors. (See the Undergraduate Catalog for specific courses that may be chosen.)
