Outdoor Education Minor |

Outdoor Education is defined as "education that is in, about or for the out-of-doors." Within this minor students will learn about the many opportunities available to them in the outdoors with appropriate training. Students who complete this minor will find themselves more employable with businesses or organizations that run this type of program or operation. Examples include, but are not limited to: youth organizations, environmental education centers, camps, state parks, nature centers, etc. This minor is open to all undergraduates. To complete this minor a student will have to successfully complete a minimum of 23 credit hours. Within the minor, course credit hours may be acquired in various ways. Candidates for this minor should declare their intentions with the Physical Education Office (200 Chase P.E., 436-3595) as early as possible to facilitate advisement. Some courses needed for this minor have prerequisites (shown in italics). Please refer to the College Catalog for specific requirements. Core Requirements 12 s.h. PHED 125
Hiking/Backpacking 3 s.h. Related Course Work A. A total of five (5) courses must be completed from this section, with a minimum of one (1) from each category: 5-11 s.h.
B. Complete one (1) of the following courses: 3-4 s.h. BIOL 100 General Biology I (LA,
NL2) ENVS 101 Introduction to Environmental
Science (LA, N2) C. PHED 340 Practicum in Outdoor Education (PHED 124 or 125, PHED 176, PHED 275, JrS, and permission of instructor) 3 s.h. TOTAL 23-31 s.h. NOTES: College rules pertaining to curriculum majors also apply to curriculum minors (cumulative GPA of 2.00 in courses applied toward minor; no Pass/Fail option grading in courses applied toward minor, residence requirement; etc.) Before enrolling in PHED 340 (Requirement C), students should have completed at least one course from the category relating to the expedition to be taken. Students may take as many P.E. activity credits as they choose, however only a maximum of 12 s.h. PHED activity credits will be counted toward the requirements for graduation.
