N.Y.S. COACHING REGISTRATION PROGRAM

This program is designed to register individuals to coach interscholastic athletic activities in New York State schools.

Men's Basketball

REQUIREMENTS - A grade of "C" or higher in each of the following courses:

PHED 306 Philosophy, Principles and Organization of Athletics in Education 3 s.h.
A review of basic philosophy and principles of athletics as an integral part of the total educational experience. Understanding of local, state, and national regulations and recommendations related to athletics, legal considerations, and personal standards for the responsibilities of the coach.

PHED 321 Health Science Applied to Coaching 4 s.h.
Selected principles of biology, anatomy, physiology, kinesiology, psychology, and sociology related to coaching; human growth and development; safety; first aid and care of athletic injuries.

PHED 207 Theories and Techniques of Coaching 3 s.h.
History, objectives, rules, teaching methods, performance skills, technical information (offense, defense, strategy, etc.), care and fitting of equipment, training techniques, officiating, etc. Sports offered:  Baseball, Football, Basketball, Track & Field, Soccer, Field Hockey, Swimming, Wrestling, Volleyball, Lacrosse, Cross Country, Tennis, Softball

NOTE: You must complete PHED 207 Theories and Techniques of Coaching for each sport you wish to be certified to coach.

Total Program 10 s.h. minimum


ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

New York State requires all applicants for teaching, coaching, counseling, and administrative certification (provisional and permanent) to have taken a certified course in Child Abuse Recognition and Reporting. Information on this seminar is available in the Physical Education Main Office, Chase P.E. 200.

 

Upon completion of all requirements, a Coaching Registration form must be filled out and submitted to the Physical Education Department in order to receive your certificate and have the certification recorded on your transcript. These forms are available in the Physical Education Main Office, Chase P.E. 200.
