N.Y.S. COACHING CERTIFICATION

Anyone wishing to coach interscholastic athletic activities in New York State schools must apply for Coaching Certification. Individuals with NYS Teacher Certification may apply directly after completing the necessary coursework and trainings. All others must apply for a Temporary Coaching License. After acquiring at least three Temporary Renewals, a Professional Coaching License may be acquired. A holder of a Professional Coaching License is considered on "equal footing" with certified teachers for coaching positions.

The Physical Education Department at SUNY Oneonta offers all coursework and trainings required for NYS Coaching Certification.

REQUIREMENTS

At various stages of application and renewals, some or all of the following are required:

• Valid First Aid
             PHED 210 Emergency Care and Prevention
     OR  PHED 216 American Red Cross Lifeguarding

• Valid CPR Certification
             PHED 126 CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer
     OR  PHED 216 American Red Cross Lifeguarding
   
• Coursework (All of the following courses are required.)
             PHED 306 Philosophy, Principles and Organization of Athletics in Education
   AND PHED 321 Health Science Applied to Coaching (This course may also fulfill the First Aid and/or CPR requirements.)
   AND PHED 207 Theory & Techniques of Coaching (specific to the sport coached)
   
• Workshops (Both of the following are required.)
    Child Abuse Identification
    School Violence Intervention and Prevention
  NOTE: Education majors will complete these as part of their required coursework.
