DANCE

This minor is open to all undergraduates and consists of courses related to the performance and production of dance and theatre. Consult with Physical Education and Theatre faculty members for additional information. Students planning to complete requirements for this minor should declare their intentions at an early point to facilitate advisement. Forms for this purpose are available from the Physical Education Department, Chase P.E. Room 200, 436-3595.

Many of the courses needed for this minor have prerequisites (shown in italics). Please refer to the College Catalog for specific requirements.

A. Core Theory Requirements                                                                                           9 s.h.

            THTR 104 Survey of Dance in America                                            3 s.h. (LA)

            PHED 239 Biomechanics of Dance (BIOL 100 or 180)                    3 s.h.

            PHED 237 Choreography-the Art & Process (SoS; PHED 131, 132, 136, or 139)

* Students who have extensive Ballet, Modern Dance, Ballroom Dance or Tap Dance experience may be able to have the prerequisite waived by instructor permission.

NOTES:

1.   College rules pertaining to curriculum majors also apply to curriculum minors (cumulative GPA of a 2.00 in courses applied toward minor; no Pass/Fail Option grading in courses applied toward minor; residence requirement, etc.) WARNING - only 6 s.h. are allowed to overlap between your major and the minor. Theater majors will need to check their requirements carefully!

2.   THEATRE MAJORS - you must take THTR 218 for the Dance Minor’s Core Theory Requirements. If a student completes PHED 237 and then changes to a Theatre Major, PHED 237 will be accepted as meeting the choreography requirement.
