On April 18-19, 1997 SUNY-Oneonta hosted its Second Annual Undergraduate Philosophy Conference. Response to the call for papers, which was mailed out and posted on the world wide web in late fall, was exceptionally strong. To ensure both impartiality and high standards, all submissions were subject to extensive blind review. The result was a truly impressive set of nineteen presentations by students from twelve institutions (Alfred, Columbia, Harvard, Hunter, Marymount, Nyack, Rutgers, Salisbury State, SUNY-Buffalo, SUNY-Oneonta, Vassar, and Virginia Tech).Hazel E. Barnes of the University of Colorado delivered a timely keynote address: Philosophy and Gender: A First-Person View. An additional conference highlight was a lecture on Tibetan Buddhism (including a demonstration and guided meditation session) by Lama Karma Tsultrim Gyamtso of the Karma Triayana Dharmachakra Monastery in Woodstock, NY.
Ninash Foundation Awards for Studies in Asian and Comparative Philosophy were presented to Daniel J. Bristol (Oneonta) and John R. Hartmann (Alfred University). For a variety of reasons, most of which were practical rather than theoretical, best of conference awards were divided into two categories: papers by Oneonta State students and papers by students from other institutions. The winners were:
- O-State students:
- Daniel J. Bristol (first place)
- Kevin Goetz and David Schaaf (second place)
- Other institutions:
- John Velona [Marymount University, Virgina] (first place)
- David Gray [Columbia University] and Emily Porter [Vassar College] (second place)
To share the excitement of the conference and encourage even higher standards of academic excellence for future events, Oneonta Philosophy Studies, published the fourteen best student papers, together with Professor Barnes' keynote address, in a volume titled Language, Ethics, and Ontology .
