Introduction
As part of the national effort to place certified and highly qualified science teachers in every classroom the SUNY Oneonta Noyce Scholars Program, will prepare and graduate New York State-certified science teachers from our highly regarded Adolescence Science Education Program. These teachers, via a combination of academic, experiential, informal science education and practical experiences, will be prepared for the rigors of teaching in both urban and rural high-need schools. Selected Noyce Scholars will be awarded approximately $13,000 to cover full tuition and most academic related expenses during their junior and senior college years. The program is designed to ensure that those selected as Noyce Scholars and receive the scholarships are prepared to meet the demands of science teaching in high need rural or urban areas and that they are committed to completing two years of teaching for every year of scholarship awarded.
Noyce Scholar Candidates at SUNY Oneonta will be recruited from incoming, admitted majors in the four core-science areas (biology, chemistry, earth sciences, and physics). Freshman cadres will join a cohesive section of General Chemistry I, followed by freshman-year informal science education and observation experiences, and culminating in specially focused education curricula in the freshman-year summer. Post freshman summer programs include Science Education Workshops and tuition paid education curricula taught by Noyce Scholar Program-related faculty who can focus the curriculum on the demands placed on science teachers in high-need districts. The sophomore year culminates with a summer experience, facilitated by SUNY Urban Teacher Education Center, which will include observational and participatory experiences in truly demanding, high-need urban NYC schools. Noyce Scholar Candidates participating in summer programs will receive stipends of approximately $300/week and dormitory and meal plan expenses are paid by the Noyce Scholars program.
After these freshman and sophomore experiences, Noyce Scholar candidates will be fully evaluated, and selected as Noyce Scholar Recipients based on their academic skills, dispositions towards teaching, focus and motivation to succeed in high need teaching environments. Scholarship awardees will participate further in program experiences during their junior and senior years including student teaching in high need school districts. Noyce Scholar Recipients are required to teach in high need rural or urban schools for four years.
