Other Information: Sasha Matson studied art history and music at the University of California at Santa Cruz, and graduated with College and Major Honors. He studied composition at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, working with noted composers John Adams and Elinor Armor, and received the Bachelor of Music degree. He founded the Steel Chords Ensemble, which commissioned and presented contemporary music in the San Francisco region. Concurrently, he undertook graduate studies at UCLA, where he received the M.A in Music, the Doctor of Philosophy in Music, with an emphasis in Composition and Theory. He joined the faculty of LaGrange College, Georgia, in 1995, and was promoted to Associate Professor of Music in 1997. He served as Adjunct Associate Professor of Music at Southampton College of Long Island University. He is the recipient of varied awards, including support from the American Music Center, B.M.I., the Sundance Institute, and UCLA. He was awarded the Atwater Kent Prize for Composition in 1993, and the Elaine Krown Klein Fine Arts Scholarship in 1995. In 1997 he was selected as a Finalist for the American Academy Southern Arts Foundation Rome Award. His recent work, The Fifth Lake, was commissioned for performance in Japan by the Just strings Ensemble, as part of a cultural exchange program sponsored by the Japanese Government. Continuing collaboration with noted audiophile producer Joe Harley, Recordings of The Fifth Lake and Range Of Light were released by the contemporary classical music label, New Albion Records. Dr. Matson currently teaches at SUNY Oneonta and lives in Cooperstown, N.Y.with his wife Elizabeth and their sons Peter and James. |
