Professors' Resources

Thanks for your interest in the Center for Academic Development and Enrichment!

We can provide a wide range of support services for your students.  In short, we provide the following:

  • Professional tutoring in writing
  • Professional tutoring in reading and study skills
  • Peer tutoring for 100-level and some 200-level courses
  • Developmental coursework.

To assist your students in availing themselves of our free services, you might begin by including the following in your syllabus:

The Center for Academic Development and Enrichment, CADE, which houses the Writing Center and Learning Center, provides a wide range of services to help foster academic success for students at any stage of their academic career--from first year students to graduate students. CADE provides individualized tutoring in writing, study skills, math, most 100-level courses, and even some 200-level courses. For information, contact CADE in 225 Alumni Hall, (607) 436-3010 or at http://cade.oneonta.edu.

If you are a student with disabilities, like all students on campus you are welcome to use CADE's services.  Student Disabilities Services is, however, a separate office, and they can be reached at (607) 436-2137 or http://www.oneonta.edu/development/sds/.

If you want your students to seek tutoring, it's helpful to give them reminders about how to reach us. Jim Greenberg from the TLTC created these instructions to show you how to make a button in Blackboard that will direct students to CADE if they need a tutor.

To refer students for assistance with writing, you will need to provide written permission.  It helps to have faculty explain to students that the Writing Center does not provide simple proofreading of papers.  We strive to support students' overall development of writing processes. Our website provides a FAQ section on how we handle writing tutoring. A handout with an explanation of our services is also available on the web.  If you would like to provide blanket permission to all students in your courses, you will also find a form for that purpose on our site.

To refer students for assistance with 100-level or 200-level courses, reading, study skills or basic math, please have them visit our website to learn about services and register on-line for peer or professional tutoring. If you'd like one of your exemplary students to be a tutor, please direct them to our website to apply to be a tutor. If you recommend a tutor, please fill out a tutor recommendation form and send it to us.

Our professional tutors hold advanced degrees in English, education or a related field.  In both the Writing Center and Learning Center, these dedicated professional tutors will work with students to help them develop appropriate strategies to achieve academic success.

If you have questions at any time, we welcome faculty to contact CADE at 436-3010 to speak with one of our staffers about our services.
