International Student Orientation for New Freshmen & Transfer Students
All international students are required to attend the International Student Orientation that is designed to be informative and practical, addressing their unique needs. Our goal is to assist students with adapting to campus and community life as quickly as possible, while taking care of important items such as setting up a bank account, preparing for course registration, obtaining a Student ID card, setting up the dormitory room, and getting ready for classes.
International students are also required to attend the SUNY Oneonta campus-wide orientation, designed to provide information on campus policies and procedures, register for classes, meet their academic advisor, participate in College activities and opening ceremonies, and gain in-depth knowledge of the people, places, and facilities that makes SUNY College at Oneonta so great.

Freshmen (high school graduates): Students will have a preset schedule with four classes that contains a blend of major and general education courses. Students register for classes during campus-wide orientation with a faculty advisor and construct a full-time schedule, typically 15 credit hours, or customized. Note: the Office of International Education may impose a 13 credit hour maximum, first semester only, as specified on the student’s acceptance letter – this is strategic help for students whose English proficiency meets admission requirements but whose TOEFL scores are not in the preferred range needed for undergraduate full-time course load. After meeting with the faculty advisor, freshmen are then able to register for courses online by themselves.
Transfer Students (with prior college coursework): Students register for classes during campus-wide orientation with a faculty advisor. After meeting with the faculty advisor, transfer students are then able to register for courses online by themselves. |
