instruction, SUNY Oneonta seeks to sharpen academic skills and offer
in-depth, career-focused study in a broad range of fields. With the
largest library collection in its sector of SUNY, excellent computer
facilities, and strong advising and support programs, Oneonta provides
students with a solid academic foundation for careers or graduate study.
Established as a teachers' college in 1889, Oneonta was a founding
college of the State University of New York in 1948. Oneonta is
accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools. The
250-acre main campus with more than forty buildings is augmented by
off-campus facilities including the 672-acre Biological Field Station
and the museum studies graduate program in nearby Cooperstown.
Oneonta's 5000 undergraduates represent diverse cultures, backgrounds,
ages, and experiences. The campus' thirteen residence halls have
full-time professional directors and staffs of resident advisors. Campus
housing is guaranteed and residence hall options include an
international living center. Residence halls are wired for telephone,
cable television, and computer. With keyed entry to residence halls, an
emergency phone system, and other security measures, Oneonta has been
cited as the safest campus setting in New York State for colleges of
5000 or more students and the ninth-safest in the US.
