KRASNOYARSK, RUSSIA Academic Year, Fall, Spring, or Summer Semester THE LOCATION: Krasnoyarsk is the capital of central Siberia's Krasnoyarsk region, an area as large as Europe. Prior to glasnost, it was a closed city and a center for space and defense research. The city of one million on the Yenisey River is now converting to civilian production. Due to its natural and technological resources, the Krasnoyarsk region is one of the most prosperous in Siberia. THE HOST INSTITUTION: The Siberian State Aerospace University was founded in 1959. Until 1992, the University was a closed higher-education institution because of its training and research for the space industry. Since its inception, however, the University has taught economics and, in 1991, a full range of business subjects was added. In 1998, a higher business school was created with the assistance of SUNY Oneonta. In addition, the University serves as the host institution for the exchange program. Students may study at any of the thirteen institutions of higher education in Krasnoyarsk with programs available for almost any major. THE PROGRAM: Education at the Siberian State Aerospace University is based on the integration of academic and internship activities. There are 350 faculty and 3000 students, earning bachelor's and master's degrees. Courses are available in English as well as in Russian. Exchange students will be especially interested in offerings in business, economics, science, and engineering. There are thirteen institutions in Krasnoyarsk, including the Pedagogical University (education), the Commerce-Trade Institute (food & fashion), and the Art Institute (music, art). Programs are available for almost any major. THE WEATHER: Although "Siberia" connotes harsh weather to North Americans, the climate in Krasnoyarsk is similar to that of upstate New York. TERM: The academic calendar is similar to that of the U.S., with two semesters (September to January and February to June). ACCOMMODATIONS: Institutions provide residence halls to its students, many of whom are not residents of Krasnoyarsk. Home stays are also available. Cafeterias are available for student meals. THE EXCHANGE AGREEMENT: Participants in the exchange program pay SUNY tuition and college fees as well as a non-refundable fee of $300. Students are required to have adequate health and repatriation insurance. All costs are estimates and are subject to change. Details on estimated costs are available from the study-abroad advisor in Netzer 312. FINANCIAL AID: Generally, federal and New York State aid are applicable toward overseas study. Applicants should inquire at the Financial Aid Office for more information. PROGRAM ELIGIBILITY: Most students participate during the second semester of their junior year. Sophomores will be accepted if space is available. Students must be in good academic standing. |
