SUNY Oneonta is a mid-size, public college rooted in scholarship across the liberal arts and sciences. We prepare students for successful careers and the pursuit of advanced degrees and develop students into life-long learners and global citizens. As a member of the State University of New York, our small classes, opportunities for undergraduate research, and student/faculty interaction are as attractive as our cost.
Our college is part of the SUNY network of 64 campuses, the largest higher education system in the United States, and it is strategically located in the foothills of the beautiful Catskill Mountains. The College is ranked as one of the 50 best regional universities in the North by U.S. News & World Report, has been one of Kiplinger's magazine’s "100 Best Values in Public Colleges" for six years straight. SUNY Oneonta has also been named to the Princeton Review’s Guide to Green Colleges and the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll every year since their inception, and we are recognized by the Carnegie Foundation for excellence in community engagement.
Nestled in the hills of Central New York, the college’s idyllic setting is ideal for study, adventure and self-discovery. Just “up the hill” from the charming City of Oneonta, our campus blends community and academe to engage, nurture, and inspire.
Initially established in 1889 as a state normal school, Oneonta has become a premier school of the SUNY system. Our strong alumni network spans the globe, demonstrating the leadership and accomplishment that exemplify an Oneonta education.
The campus is 4.5 hours to New York City (NYC) by bus and 1 hour from Albany, the capital of New York and a major shopping area. Oneonta has a progressive, local and interstate bus system running 7 days per week with routine stops on campus. Downtown Oneonta is walking distance from SUNY and has local shopping, unique gift shops, restaurants, farmer’s markets, and entertainment in this historic city. A nearby shopping mall is a short distance to the campus by bus. The Albany International Airport is just over 1 hour away—The OIE office provides free airport pickup for new student arrivals. JFK International Airport is also within reach and has an Airtrack/railway/bus system direct to Oneonta.
