The following
is a listing of scholarships sponsored by the Human Ecology
Department. Applications are available at the end of the fall
semester in the Human Ecology Department Office (Human Ecology
Building, Room 102).
Sextilla Dunker and Frances K. Todd Scholarships
These scholarships are given to the department in memory of
Sextilla Dunker and Frances K. Todd, who did outstanding work
for the New York State Federation of Home Bureaus. Todd was
Treasurer of the Federation and Dunker was the 23rd President.
These scholarships are awarded to two upper-classmen majoring
in one of the Human Ecology programs at S.U.N.Y. Oneonta.
These students must show exceptional promise as leaders in
the profession. Financial need is considered. Recipients must
be residents of one of the counties in the Bureau. While the
department collects application information, final selection
is made by a selection committee appointed by the Bureau.
The amount the scholarship may vary, but range from $200 -
$500 annually.
Oneida County Scholarship
This scholarship is available to a resident of Oneida County
who is majoring in one of the programs in Human Ecology at
S.U.N.Y. Oneonta. Preferences are given to upper-classmen
with outstanding academic records, who participate in department
activities and organizations and show leadership potential.
The amount of the scholarship varies, but is usually $150.
The Human Ecology Scholarship
This scholarship was endowed with gifts from retired and current
faculty members and memorials. It is awarded to a junior or
senior with a minimum overall GPA of 2.5. The student must
take an active role in department activities and student organizations
and display leadership potential. The scholarship is approximately
$500 per year.
The American Inter-Continental University Scholarship
The American Inter-Continental University regularly contributes
scholarships to majors who wish to study in London, England.
Eligibility requirements include a major in Apparel and Textiles
and a GPA of at least 2.5 overall and in the major. Preference
is given to students who have taken an active role in the
Student Fashion Society. Each scholarship is for $500.

Ruth Ritter Scholarship
This scholarship is sponsored by the New York State Family
and Consumer Sciences Educators Association. It is awarded
to junior/senior Family and Consumer Sciences Education majors
who show outstanding abilities in the field of family and
consumer sciences and potential to become an excellent teacher.
Funding is need based. Applicant must be a student member
of the NYSFCSEA. Applications are available in the Human Ecology
Department Office (Human Ecology Building, Room 102) early
in the fall semester. Two $500 scholarships are awarded each
year.

Each of
the above named scholarships is in the amount of $650 and
will be awarded to Phi Upsilon Omicron National Honor Society
members enrolled in baccalaureate programs. Selection will
be based on the applicant's scholastic record; participation
in Phi U and other collegiate activities; a statement of professional
aims and goals; professional and/or work experience; and recommendations.
Closs/Parnitzke/Clarke Scholarship
$650 will be awarded to a Phi U member in family and consumer
sciences or a related area who is working toward a baccalaureate
degree.
Jean Dickerscheid Scholarship
$650 will be awarded to be used for educational purposes will
be awarded to a Phi U member who has demonstrated leadership
ability and attained a 3.5 grade point average (4.0 possible).
That student must be pursuing a baccalaureate degree in family
and consumer sciences or a related area.
Mary Weiking Franken Scholarship
A $650 scholarship will be given to a Phi U member working
toward a baccalaureate degree in family and consumer sciences
or a related area with preference given to majors in child/family
or family and consumer sciences education.
Treva C. Kintner Scholarships (2 granted)
Two $650 scholarships will be awarded to Phi U students over
30 years of age. Recipients must have completed at least half
of the academic work toward a baccalaureate degree in family
and consumer sciences or a related area.
Lillian P. Schoephoerster Scholarship
A $1,000 scholarship will be given to a non-traditional student
who is a member of Phi U working toward a baccalaureate degree
in family and consumer sciences or a related subject.
Sutherland/Purdy Scholarship
A $650 scholarship will be awarded to a Phi U member pursuing
a baccalaureate degree in clothing and textiles or a related
area such as apparel design or fashion merchandising. This
student must have held a leadership position in her/his Phi
U chapter and have earned at least a 3.0 out of 4.0 overall
grade point average.
Geraldine Clewall Scholarship
A $650 scholarship will be awarded to a Phi U member in family
and consumer sciences or a related area who is working toward
a baccalaureate degree. Selection will be based on the applicant's
scholastic record, participation in Phi U, professional aims
and goals, and recommendations.
Awards
available to undergraduate majors (deadline is February 1):
Janice Cory Bullock Award
$300 will be awarded annually to a non-traditional Phi U student
who desires to continue education in family and consumer sciences
or a related area which will enable gainful employment.
Note: Seniors are eligible for
the following Phi U awards:
Sarah Thorniley Phillips Leadership Awards (3
granted)
$300 each will be awarded annually to Phi U undergraduate
members for outstanding leadership and participation in collegiate
and community programs.
Lynne White Scheider Award
$300 will be awarded annually to a Phi U undergraduate member
for demonstrated leadership and scholarship in the area of
consumer affairs, personal finance, and/or family finance.
Orinne Johnson Creative Communication Award
$300 is awarded annually to a Phi U collegiate member or collegiate
chapter to encourage, support, and recognize communication
skills. Entries must convey a clear message that addresses
the objectives of the mission of family and consumer sciences.
Written papers, essays, videotapes, slide sets, broadcasts,
brochures, and art work are examples of possible entries.
Geraldine Clewell Senior Awards (2 granted)
$300 each will be awarded annually to Phi U graduating seniors
for exemplary participation and service to their local chapters.
At least one recommendation must be from the local chapter
advisor.
Honors:
Academic Festival
Each May, an awards program, the Academic Festival, is held
to honor the students in the Human Ecology Department who have
given extra effort to their student organizations, internships,
or academic program.
Graduation Awards
A graduating senior from each area of the Human Ecology Department
is selected by faculty to be honored for their accomplishment
both in and out of the classroom. Additionally, one student
is selected as the department's Outstanding Student. This student
is recognized at an all-college event late in the spring. All
outstanding students are recognized during the department's
Commencement ceremony in May. |
