Many types of financial assistance exist and students are advised to investigate all sources. These generally include institutional, organizational, federal, state, and private funds. Often, a variety of financial aid is offered by the particular SUNY-Oneonta department or a professional organization and the student should write directly for specifics. The federal government provides grants and loans based on financial need and many states offer awards to residents who demonstrate financial necessity. Private sources of financial aid should not be overlooked and include corporate endowments or grants, or awards offered by community and civic groups, philanthropic organizations, and religious groups.
The Department awards include the Francis K. Todd and Sextilla Dunker Scholarships. Established by the New York State Federation of Home Bureau, these scholarships are awarded to home economics students who are residents of New York State. Recipient selection is based on academic achievement, as well as financial need, extra class activities, work experience, character, and breadth of interest in the Human Ecology profession. Preference is given to seniors, juniors, and sophomores, in that order. The amount of the scholarship is variable and the award is given directly to the student. In addition, some county homemaker programs provide scholarship funds for county residents attending SUNY-Oneonta.
Each May, an Awards Program is held to honor the Students in
the Human Ecology Department who have given extra effort to their
student organizations, internships or academic program.
Additionally, a graduating senior from each area of the Human
Ecology Department may be selected by faculty to be honored each
year for their accomplishments both in the classroom and out.
Additionally, one student is selected as the Department's Outstanding
Student. This student is recognized at an all College event late
in the spring. All outstanding students are recognized during
the Department's Spring Commencement Ceremony in May.
A degree with honors in the Human Ecology Department is awarded to students who have completed at least 24 s.h. of course work at the College with a minimum 3.5 GPA. Transfer students must complete 18 s.h. in the major at the College at Oneonta and maintain a 3.5 GPA or better for department honors. Students may not qualify for department honors in an academic area for which they have not registered as a major.
It is the responsibility of the student to request, through
the department chair, consideration for honors in each academic
area.
Students achieve the Dean's List if they earn a 3.5 or higher term GPA for any semester in which a minimum of 12 s.h. of work are completed with a qualitative letter grade and no more than one incomplete of pending grade. Students receive a congratulatory letter from their Dean recognizing the achievement.
Upon graduation, a College at Oneonta honors degree may be awarded to students who complete 60 semester hours here, including 45 graded hours. The three categories of honors degrees are:
