VIII. VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

Center for Social Responsibility and Community

Oneonta has a unique on-campus resource - the Center for Social Responsibility and Community. The Center was established as a result of a partnership between the State University of New Work College at Oneonta and the W.K. Kellogg Foundation. The Center's mission is to instill in students a sense of social responsibility and an understanding of its relationship to building strong communities. The Mission is accomplished by strengthening the relationship between academic study and volunteer community service in higher education. Through the Center, students are connected to service-learning in off-campus local, regional, national, and international settings for students.

The Center for Social Responsibility and Community coordinates the program which leads to American Humanics certification.  The certification in non-profit agency management is a valuable adjunct to a Human Ecology or Dietetics degree.  Interested Dietetics majors should discuss the certification requirements with the Dietetics Program Director or their Academic Advisor.

The Center places individual students with agencies in either ongoing relationships or for one-time opportunities. Ongoing relationships last a semester or more and may be established with programs such as:

One-time opportunities may last only a few hours or days and may include working on:

Students may also design their own projects on local issues not currently being addressed. Funding for student-led initiatives is available through the Student Philanthropy Board.

Interested students should speak with students in the Center or with their faculty advisor about these and other volunteer opportunities.

Other Volunteer Opportunities

Students interested in other volunteer experiences are encouraged to talk with their faculty advisor about their interests.
