Academic Advisement is a vital support function that students should use early and consistently throughout their course of study. College Advisors, Room 100 Netzer, assist students with credit evaluations and answer a wide range of questions about courses of study.
At the Office of Career Planning and Placement, students may take aptitude tests, have personal access to interviews and professional staff assistance in achieving the student's expressed needs and goals. Staff advisers work with students in assessing potential. The student is then able to realistically view long-range and short-range goals in light of abilities.
Students are strongly encouraged to declare their major as soon as they have made their choice. After officially declaring a major, students are assigned a faculty adviser in the student's major field of interest. Faculty Academic Advisors assist majors in planning their academic program. Students should schedule regular meetings with their adviser to review academic progress and plan future course schedules. Each semester, the College provides students with the latest copy of their Academic Advisement Document (AAD) through the Registrar’s Web page. The AAD is a vital resource for monitoring progress toward graduation and planning course schedules.
An academic adviser's main function is to help the student plan each semester's schedule according to the published requirements of the student's declared program. The assigned adviser must initially approve many of the required permission/approval forms required by the College. The advisement program continues throughout the student's course of study at SUNY-Oneonta. Advisers may assist students by providing referrals to appropriate specialists in academic or student personnel areas.
The Undergraduate Advisement Handbook and College Catalog detail information such as major and minor curricula requirements, General Education requirements, college wide examination requirements, pass-fail options and much more academic information. These publications are updated regularly and students are expected to have knowledge of the information contained therein. The ultimate responsibility for schedule planning and adherence to all college policies rests with each student.
Students may request a change of adviser by obtaining the proper form from the Registrar's Office and following the instructions on the form. Completed forms should be returned to the Human Ecology Department Secretary in Human Ecology 100.
