Family and Consumer Sciences Education


Certification is in Family and Consumer Sciences, allowing the student to teach Home and Career Skills in the middle school and Family and Consumer Science in the high school.
The current Family and Consumer Sciences Education Undergraduate Program offers a broad knowledge of family and consumer sciences, plus skills in planning and communicating this knowledge to others. Graduates in the teacher education program receive a B.S. Degree and provisional certification (valid for five years) to teach Family and Consumer Sciences in grades K-12 and in adult education. A Master's degree must be completed with two years of successful teaching experience to achieve permanent certification in New York State.
The B.S. degree in Family and Consumer Sciences Education is valuable in obtaining a teaching position, as well as positions in family and community agencies and organizations. Employment prospects for graduates are excellent. There are currently not enough certified family and consumer sciences teachers to fill available vacancies. About three positions exist in New York State for every certified teacher.
A major in family and consumer sciences education provides you with a broad knowledge of human ecology. Courses are taken in the following areas: apparel and textiles, child development and family, food and nutrition, consumer studies and housing or interior design. In addition, courses taken in education prepare you to plan, implement and evaluate programs for a wide age range of students.
The family and consumer sciences education major emphasizes the development of leadership skills through participation in student clubs and organizations. Collaborative learning is a feature of courses in family and consumer sciences education. Importance is placed on integrating theory into practice. Students have numerous opportunities for observation and participation in public schools throughout their program. In addition, opportunities are available to observe and work in informal adult education settings.
As part of their program, students may choose to minor in one of the following areas: Family Studies, Apparel and Textiles, Consumer Resource Management, Nutrition, Early Childhood Education or Child Development.
