Master of Science Lake management

The purpose of the Lake Management program, which will take full advantage of the natural resources and infrastructure at the College’s Biological Field Station near Cooperstown, NY, and a newly renovated science building on campus, is to train students for careers as Lake Managers capable of modifying the character and quality of our aquatic resources to meet the concerns of water providers, lakeside municipalities, recreational lake users, as well as improving the quality of life of those who live, work and play on our tens of thousands of inland lakes, ponds, reservoirs and the streams tributary to them. Degree recipients will have met the requirements to apply for certification as a Certified  Lake Manager (CLM) or Certified Lake Professional (CLP) by the North American Lake Management  Society (NALMS).


Degree Requirements:

  • At least 32 s.h. of approved courses beyond the baccalaureate degree including: a minimum of 20 s.h. of approved graduate course work in Biology excluding thesis, seminar, independent/directed study, and internship. A minimum of 6 s.h. of Biol 698 Thesis, and up to a maximum of 12 s.h. of thesis, seminar, independent/directed study, or internship must be completed.
  • Minimum GPA of 3.0.
  • Diagnostic Examination.
  • Research Thesis, with an with an Oral Comprehensive Exam and Defense.

Admission Requirements:

All students applying for admission to degree status are required to:

  • Submit a completed application and the non-refundable fee. Application fee waived for SUNY Oneonta Alumni.
  • Provide evidence of completion of a Bachelor’s degree in biology, earth science, environmental science or functionally related area. Students not meeting the minimum requirements may be admitted to the program on the condition that undergraduate deficiencies be made up.
  • Submit three letters of recommendation.
  • Submit a written statement explaining the purpose/goal for seeking the degree.

  • Have achieved an undergraduate GPA of 3.0 in major field.
