MST Foreign Language Education (40 credits)
to begin Summer 2010

Complete it in one year!
Admission Requirements:

All students applying for admission to degree status are required to:

  • Submit a completed application and the $50.00 non-refundable application fee.
  • Submit an official transcript of an earned Bachelor's degree with a major in one of the approved foreign languages(French, Spanish, Italian, German, Arabic, or Chinese) or its equivalent. This degree should be earned within five years of the application.
  • Have achieved an undergraduate gpa of 3.0 overall and a 3.0 gpa in language content area in last two years of undergraduate work.
  • Complete FLAN 250 or submit documentation of 50 hours of supervised foreign language classroom observation and participation. *
  • Submit three letters of reference.
  • Submit scores from an assessment of oral proficiency, ie: Oral Proficiency Interview.
  • Submit a personal statement, written in the language for which certification is sought.**
  • Complete a personal on-campus interview that will include an assessment of oral proficiency.

*In spring semesters, SUNY Oneonta will offer an on-line course FLAN 250 for anyone completing the 50 hours of field experience at locations outside of the Oneonta area. This two-credit course will ensure that the early field experiences will meet the admission requirement.Applicants will need to be able to work 50 hours in classrooms where the language(s) of certification sought are taught.

** Students will need to write 200 words in the language for which certification is sought explaining how you learned a language other than your native language, what teaching practices made your learning successful and what challenges do students learning a second language face.

Prerequisite: Pass CST in language of certification title.
Pass LAST, all courses in program completed except EPSY 525 or 515.
