Committee on Research

Introduction

A major objective of the Committee on Research is to encourage student research and creative activity on campus and to enhance that aspect of the educational mission of the College. The Committee sponsors two major initiatives that support this objective: (1) the Student Grant Program for Research and Creative Activity, and (2) Student Research Day.

Student Grant Program for Research and Creative Activity

This grant program is funded by the State University College at Oneonta Foundation, Inc. through investment income from unrestricted endowment, made possible through charitable gifts and grants to the College.

Students with faculty sponsorship in any discipline or interdisciplinary area are encouraged to apply (although the program’s priority is to fund undergraduate applicants, graduate students may apply). The proposed projects should represent truly collaborative student-faculty efforts. Students are responsible for writing the proposal, carrying out the project, and presenting the project at Student Research Day. Faculty sponsors are expected to be continuously involved through planning the project, assisting with its progress, and assuring its completion within the specified time frame. Students are encouraged to work closely with their faculty sponsor. Projects that are novel and initiated primarily by students have priority over those which are largely continuations of ongoing faculty work previously funded by this grant program. Curricular, instructional or educational program development is not considered as meeting the primary purpose of this program. Projects that are required as part of a regular course’s curriculum are not eligible (independent study work is eligible).

The Student Grant Program is competitive; awards are made once per semester. The guidelines for the Fall 2009 grant competition are available for download from this site. The deadline for the fall 2009 round of 2010 funding is 5:00 p.m. on November 18, 2009.

Student Research Day

The annual Student Research Day sponsored by the Committee on Research, the Grants Development Office, and the College at Oneonta Foundation, Inc. offers a professional venue in which students present their research and creative activity projects (whether funded or not by the Student Grant Program; grant recipients are required to present at a Student Research Day). Work is displayed in a variety of formats including poster, computer display and other exhibits. Supplies, visual equipment, and other support are provided to create displays. The event includes a keynote address by a distinguished SUNY Oneonta alumnus.

The 2009 Student Research Day featured 80 presentations with 150 student participants and 60 different faculty sponsors. The 2010 Student Research Day will be held on Thursday, April 22, from 2:00–5:00 pm in the Hunt College Union. The keynote speaker will be Dr. James Hayward '76, President and CEO of Applied DNA Sciences, Inc. Please check back for additional details.
