EDTPA Retake and Safety Net Guidance

EdTPA has created guidelines for retake decision making and support. Click on this link to access them for all areas except Special Education: edTPA retake guidelines.

EdTPA has also released a document on submission guidelines. Click here to access it: edTPA Submission Requirements

EDTPA “Safety Net”

The edTPA safety net, which was initially approved by the New York State Education Department (NYSED) Board of Regents at its July 2014 meeting and subsequently revised at its April 2015 meeting and then revised again at the May 2015 meeting, allows a candidate who did not receive a passing score on the required edTPA to use a passing score on the ATS-W in lieu of a passing score on the required edTPA.

Pursuant to the regulations, a candidate who applies for and meets all certification requirements for the initial certificate on or before June 30, 2018, except he/she took and did not receive a passing score on the required edTPA prior to June 30, 2017, may either:

  1. use a passing score on an ATS-W taken on or before April 30, 2014 (before the new certification examination requirements became effective), or
  2. use a passing score on an ATS-W taken prior to June 30, 2017 and after receipt of a failing numeric score on the edTPA.

For further details, please see the NYSED website.

Please note that the “safety net” is an option, not a required course of action. A student who fails the edTPA may also elect to submit an edTPA retake.

EDTPA Retake Support

SUNY Fredonia is now offering an edTPA support course that is open to EVERYONE! This course will support professionals in the development of an edTPA portfolio that is required for certification in New York State. It is intended for professionals who are NOT enrolled in one of Fredonia's initial teacher preparation programs. However, there are two sets of professionals this course is intended for: (1) those who have failed the edTPA and need to retake it, and (2) those who have already completed a teacher education program (either in New York or out-of-state) seeking NYS certification who have never taken the edTPA.

(ALST), EAS, CST and Multi-Subject: Secondary (Grades 7-12) Safety Nets

NYSED has updated the Safety Nets for the Academic Literacy Skills Test (ALST), Educating All Students (EAS), and certain redeveloped Content Specialty Tests (CST) exams. Details can be found on the New York State Education Department (NYSED) website. Safety Net related questions can be directed to NYSED at examsafetynet@nysed.gov. Any exam requirement to be satisfied by one of the Safety Nets must be satisifed on or before June 30, 2017; the candidate then has until June 30, 2018 to complete all other certification requirements.

For the details of each of the Safety Nets, please see the following NYSED links:
