Divisional Honors
and Honors Program
Divisional Honors
Students are eligible for both divisional and college honors.
Honors residency requirements in the major is at least 24
s.h. Transfer students must have at least 18 s.h. in residence
in the major.
A degree with honors in the academic area is
awarded to the student who has completed the major residency
requirement at this college with a 3.50 GPA or better, if
recommended by the department. Students may not qualify for
divisional honors in an academic area for which they have
not registered as a major.
A student with two major academic areas may qualify for honors
in both areas.
It is the responsibility of the student to request, through
the office of the associate dean, consideration for divisional honors in
each academic area.
Honors Program
The Division of Economics and Business supports participation
in the College Honors Program by students enrolled in Division
majors. Students who have been invited to join the Honors
Program upon admission to the College are encouraged to identify
themselves to the Associate Dean of Economics and Business.
Matriculated students whose academic records qualify them
for admission to the Honors Program are encouraged to contact
Dr. Michael Merilan, Director of Honors Program, Dean, Division
of Science & Social Science, 336 Netzer Administration
Building, (607) 436-2125. Additional information is available
at:
http://www.oneonta.edu/academics/honorsprogram/default.asp
Students in Economics and Business enjoy the advantage of
taking an integrative, multi-disciplinary capstone course in
Strategic Management as part of the Business Economics and
Accounting majors. This makes it possible to more readily complete
the final stage of the Honors Program. However, qualified students
must commit to the Honors Program at an early stage of their
academic program so that the Division can properly plan offering
Honors sections of courses in a timely manner.
Scholarships
The Division of Economics and Business has five
endowed scholarship funds dedicated to majors in Accounting,
Business Economics or Economics. They are the Economics
and Business Division Endowed Scholarship Fund, the
John and Claudia DeMelis "Founders Scholarship
in Accounting," the John Doherty Scholarship,
the Steven Edelstein Scholarship in Honor of Dr. Foster
Brown and the Dr. Ignatius J. H. Ts'ao Scholarship.
Eligibility for awards from these endowed scholarships
is based upon academic achievement at the College at
Oneonta, measured in terms of overall grade point average
and grade point average in a major offered by the Division
of Economics and Business. The "Founders Scholarship
in Accounting" is restricted to Professional Accounting
Majors. |

Emeritus Professor Grace Ts'ao receives a check from
Associate Dean Wade Thomas in March 2003, reflecting
donations by faculty and friends to the Dr. Ignatius
J. H. Ts'ao Scholarship Fund for Economics and Business
students. |
There is no application process for these scholarships.
Eligibility for an award is determined by grade point average
and a minimum number of earned semester hours.
Awards are contingent upon enrollment at Oneonta in a Division
Of Economics and Business major. Awards are renewable based
upon continued enrollment and sustained academic performance.
