Congratulations to our "Students of Distinction"

SPRING 2008

Elizabeth Cousineau, dual major in Adolescence Ed:Earth Science and Earth Science received th 2008 SUNY Chancellor's Award for Student Excellence. This is the highest honor SUNY bestows upon students. Beth is an award-winning scholar in Earth Sciences. She is the founding member and co-organizer of the Assembly of Women in Earth Sciences, volunteers as a lab assistant and camp councelor for the PR2EPS Summer Science Camp for high school students and presented her original research on the "Effect of Inquiry-Based Instruction on Conceptual Growth" at the March meeting of the Geological Society of America.


David Mase, Geology Major, has been chosen to receive the Annual Academic Achievement Award presented to him at a dinner in Morris Hall Otsego Grille, Tuesday, April 8, 2008. The criteria for this special award includes minimum GPA of 3.5 in his major, excellence in research, leadership and involvement in the Department, Campus, and Community activities and participation in academic and/or professional situations outside the College.


Michael DeVasto, a junior-level Geology Major in the Earth Sciences Department, has received a National Science Foundation, Research Experience for Undergraduates (NSF-REU) internship to study the coast geology of Maine during the summer of 2008.  This is highly competitive program and the University of Southern Maine selected Michael from a national pool of undergraduate students majoring in geology.   Field work will involve sea kayaking to coastal islands followed by the use of GPS and state-of-the-art surveying equipment to conduct surface outcrop mapping, structural analysis, and geologic interpretation.  The 8-week internship includes a $2400 stipend, travel reimbursement, 6 credit hours in Field Mapping, plus support to present research findings at the Northeast Section Meeting of the Geological Society of America meeting in Portland, ME, in Spring 2009.


Five of our Earth Sciences students have been recognized by the Spring 2008 "Best and Brightest" program which acknowledges students for their outstanding academic work and community involvement.
