Volunteer Opportunities for 2012- 2013

Each semester CSRC receives new volunteer job descriptions for area agencies and organizations. The Center can assist you in getting involved in volunteer opportunities that interest you or best suit your academic needs. It is important that you sign up through the Center in order to make certain that the agencies we work with are kept informed. Please stop by the Center in Alumni Hall 101C to see our list of volunteer opportunities or call a CSRC Coordinator at X-2651 or 2098 to sign up. Note: Unless indicated, all volunteer opportunities listed below are ongoing. For one-time only events, stop by CSRC at 101C Alumni Hall or click here.

"Adopt a Grandparent" (Robynwood Adult Home)

Volunteers are paired up with a senior to be a "grandchild." Volunteers must meet with senior at least twice a month.

Adult Day Care (Fox Adult Day Center)

Volunteers are needed to assist in entertainment (music, juggling, play/skit), group chair exercise or creative movements.

After School Help

Volunteers are needed to help with homework and tutor students at Valleyview, Greaterplains, and Riverside schools.

Bassett Hospital Cooperstown

“All Kinds of Things” Volunteers. Need to take a bus or have a car.

Big Buddy Program [Delaware County]

Delaware Opportunities is looking for volunteers to mentor youth ages 5-16.

CANO Intern (formally UCCCA)

Volunteers will help update the database, painting, filing, setting up, etc.

Caring Connections

Volunteers for caring connections provide a listening ear to those in our community who often feel unheard. Volunteers provide an avenue to much needed services assistance. Must go through training first.

Classroom Helper (Adult GED Program)

Volunteers are needed during school days to help out in the classrooms in Valleyview, Riverside, & Greater Plains elementary schools.

EOP Tutor

Volunteers are needed to be an Academic Center Assistant. Volunteers are required to have a 3.3 GPA or better; Junior or Senior status; knowledge of the subject matter applying for; a demonstrated ability to understand and work well with students. Second semester sophomores with HIGH GPAs may be considered. Volunteers must provide one-on-one or small group tutorial to students in various courses – assist with studying, class notes, test preparation, textbook interpretation, and writing.

ESL Tutor

Need college students for 3 specific assignments, once a week until May
1. A 2nd grade boy on Saturday mornings at the public library. He is a bilingual Spanish kid and needs help with school homework and reading.
2. Three bilingual Chinese girls during the afterschool program at River Side School, helping with homework.
3. One student to tutor an adult ESL learner at Center St School Wednesday evenings 5:45-->7:30
4.  In general whoever would like to volunteer with the Oneonta school district in the afterschool program, at any of the 3 elementary schools.  This could be helping the kids with homework, reading with them or even teaching a second language lesson with a group of them.

Friends of Recovery (The Turning Point)

Volunteers are needed to help with reception, house keeping, meet and greet, and clerical work. There is a training that is provided.

Head Start

Volunteers are needed to be a classroom assistant. Duties included helping teachers in classrooms with activities. Volunteers need to like children, be responsible, and have leadership skills. Need car or can take the bus.

Hearts of Hope

Great for clubs or organizations to participate in. Each ceramic heart kit costs four dollars. You receive each kit and paint them however you desire and then they are sent to a person who is on a waiting list for one.

Hospice Thrift Shop

1-2 Volunteers per day are needed to help sort and hang clothes and help around the store.

Lantern Hill Project (next to Wal-Mart)

Volunteers are needed to help tutor in pairs, do workshops for the parents of the children, etc.

The Lord's Table [Oneonta]

The Lord's Table at St. James Episcopal Church meets a critical need in the Oneonta area. This project demonstrates the spirit of giving, hospitality and caring for others that exists in our home community. Weekdays (between 4 and 7 p.m.), volunteers at The Lord's Table prepare and serve meals and assist with cleanup.
Main Street Baptist Church
Seeking volunteers for a Sunday day care. Assist with the daycare/classroom on Sunday mornings. Come to CSRC to fill out an application.
Mothers of Preschoolers International [Oneonta]
Volunteers needed to play with children and assist with snack prep and other activities. Wednesday mornings.

Nechama Sandy Relief Program

Over the next twelve to fourteen months, NECHAMA will be assisting homeowners as they rebuild, installing subfloors, insulation and Sheetrock, painting, and doing other finish work. Nechama is now accepting volunteer reservations from individuals and groups interested in helping our Hurricane Sandy Recovery Program in New York. Ninash Foundation [Oneonta]

Volunteers needed to help with fundraising. Interns interested in working with local nonprofits are welcome.
Oneonta Job Corps [Oneonta]
Tutors needed for students in GED preparation program: math, reading and other subjects.

The Plains

Volunteers are needed to spend time with the elderly. Volunteers must be able to communicate effectively with residents, families, staff, and general public, must have compassion for and desire to work with the frail elderly. Volunteers must meet all State requirements. Need a car or you can take the bus.

Resource Mentor

Volunteers are needed to be a mentor for kids 12-20 once a month with bullying, conflict and resolution and other social skills. Need a car.

Riverside School [Oneonta]

After-school volunteers (weekdays) to assist with homework and play games with kids.
Robynwood Home for Adults [Oneonta]
Volunteers to read to residents and engage in games and other activities.
The Salvation Army Corps [Oneonta]
The Salvation Army Oneonta Corps is in need of volunteers to assist with their food pantry and youth activities. The food pantry position (weekdays) involves keeping the pantry stocked and packing food baskets for families. Youth activities assistants help with after-school recreation and crafts programs, in addition to serving snacks (Wednesdays only).
Saturday's Bread [Oneonta]
Saturday's Bread, Oneonta's "premier soup kitchen," is looking for volunteers Saturdays (9 a.m. to 2 p.m.) at the First United Methodist Church. Volunteers may go individually or with a group and are asked to stay throughout because their service is needed for setup, food preparation and cleanup. (All volunteers must be placed on the Saturday's Bread schedule through the CSRC office before reporting at the site.) Spots are limited, sign up early.

Spanish Mentor

For students who are able to speak Spanish and are willing to commit to the full semester working with children or families.

Student Disability Services (SDS) [SUNY Oneonta]

SDS is in need of note-takers and volunteers to read books onto tapes and record them for disabled students. If interested in note-taking, email your name, phone number and course CRN numbers to www.oneonta.edu/development/sds/. SDS will contact you if your help is needed. Volunteer hours are shown on student transcripts.

Tutor

A volunteer is needed to help a 6th grade boy with math and english. You can meet up at a public place.

Upper Catskill Community Council of the Arts (UCCCA) [Oneonta]

Volunteers are needed to greet customers, process sales, maintain the store and assist with light cleaning and organization (Saturdays).

USDA-NRCS

Volunteers are needed to help in reducing soil erosion, conserving our water and improving its quality and developing pride for our country’s natural resources heritage.

Valleyview Elementary School

2-3 Student volunteers are needed to help out in the school during school days and some after school days.

YMCA [Oneonta]

The Oneonta Family YMCA is seeking volunteers to serve in several areas. One time events and ongoing. Stop by CSRC for more information.
