Service-Learning
Program Options For Faculty Members
Service-Learning can take many forms including a semester-long
project, a 10-20 hour model of service, a student- initiated project,
or through Residence Life.
Steps for faculty to implement service-learning may include:
-
Contacting CSRC Director Linda Drake for information on
integrating a service-learning component into course work.
-
Determining how to connect the service experience with
curriculum objectives and apply the list of Service-Learning
Standards. Decide whether service will be required or optional,
or as a project including the preparation, action and reflection
components.
-
When deciding on the service opportunities to be
offered to students, meeting the Center Director to tailor them to the
curriculum objectives. The Director Linda Drake will initiate the agency or
organization placements. If many students are involved (over
three sections) it is a good idea to meet with the agency to discuss
the course objectives, planned outcomes and how students
can fulfill the agency's need. Important information to include
is: how hours will be recorded; who will be supervising students'
on-site experiences; whether an agency will play a role in evaluating
the service; and when an agency can expect to receive any tangible
products as a result of placement, such as a marketing plan.
