Each semester the CSRC receives new job descriptions for the various agencies in the local area. When you visit us in Alumni Hall 101C, we will be able to help you get involved in volunteer opportunities that would best suit your needs. Take a look and see if anything interests you!!

Please be aware that it is important to go through us at the CSRC to make sure that the agencies are well informed as to what is going on. Stop by Alumni Hall 101C or call ext. 2651 or 2098 to sign up.

ARC
 

The ARC of Otsego is looking for volunteers to help assist consumers with a disability with transportation at Day Program Monday - Friday, 8:30 a.m.  - 9:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. - 3:30 p.m. The ARC is also looking for people who are interested in helping to run/participate and assist consumers in activities, complete goals, and go out in the community. This is available Monday - Friday from 9:30 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. Please contact the Center if this interests you.

Big Buddy Program, Delaware Opportunities

Description: Cooperatively working together with the Big Buddy program (mentoring) youths aged 5-16.
Brace Residential Center

Description: Must be willing to work with boys ages 14-17 yearls old. Join in on activities, games, sports, and crafts.

Catskill Rural AIDS Services (CRAS)
 

The Catskill Rural AIDS Services is looking for volunteer drivers to provide transportation to clients on a flexible schedule. Please contact the CSRC for more details.

CRAS is  looking for HIV/AIDS educators to provide education in schools and various venues for students of all ages and the general public, with a focus on prevention.

CHOICES, and PAIRS (Providing Advocacy and Intervention Regarding Sexual Assault)
 

Rebecca Harrington is looking for volunteers to become members of the aforementioned organizations. CHOICES is looking for peer educators to develop, implement, and evaluate campus peer education programs. Volunteers would be asked to attend monthly meetings and participate in two health promotion events per semester. CHOICES volunteers will be given 12 hours of CPE training. PAIRS (Providing Advocacy and Intervention Regarding Sexual Assault) is looking for student volunteers to join the committee, to attend monthly meetings and help with office support (mailings, awareness ribbons assembly). Da'Vida: The Communities' Center for Fair Trade
 

Time: 10am-1:30pm
Days: Tues., Wed., Sat.
Location: 179 Main St.

Da'Vida is a non-profit community/college organization providing an outlet for Third World cooperatives and for local producers. Da'Vida, which means "give life," is a continuation of the initial effort to establish a Fair Trade Center in Oneonta. In November and December of 2001, the center was opened on Main Street in cooperation with Hartwick College. Da'Vida is looking for volunteers to help in the sale of fair trade items in a retail setting and promote fair trade through discussion of items with the customers.

First United Methodist Church
  The after-school program needs volunteers who wish to mentor teens and work with the youth activities assistant. Hours are from 3:00-5:00, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays.
   
Girl Scouts
 

The Indian-Hill Council at 3200 Chestnut St. is looking for a Co-Leader for two Fridays a month. Candidates must have office and people skills and like to work with kids.

Habitat for Humanity
 

The Habitat for Humanity is looking for volunteers to help in the building of houses or to serve as committee members to help in fundraising, publicity, and public relations. Habitat for Humanity has houses they are currently working on right here in Oneonta! Habitat currently has three sites around the Otsego County area and has scheduled volunteer work hours every Thursday and Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Hampshire House
 

Hampshire House is looking for a recreation director to organize resident opportunities for entertainment. The position would last the entire school year.

Also looking for general volunteers; one-on-one visits; assist with activities; drivers; teach computer skills to seniors; swimming; arts & crafts. Days & times are flexible.  Please contact the CSRC for more details.

   
HEP - High School Equivalence Program
 

HEP is looking for tutors for the GED program. Tutors are needed to help students with general academic studies. If possible they are looking for two to three students a week to work flexible hours. All programs are offered at Bugbee Hall. Call the CSRC for more information.

LEAF (Council on Alcoholism/Addictions)
 

LEAF is looking for a program manager to assist in the set-up and registration duties at the SADD conference hosted by SUNY Oneonta, located in the Craven lounge in Morris Hall. Date to be announced. Please contact the CSRC for further details.

The Lord's Table
 

The Lord's Table located at the St. James Episcopal Church of Oneonta was opened in April 1998 and still plays a critical role in Oneonta. This projects shows that the spirit of giving, hospitality and caring for others also exists in the home community. Volunteers at St. James Church will prepare and serve meals and clean up between the hours of 4:00 - 7:00 p.m.  weekdays, throughout the year.

Mental Health Association in Ulster County

Description: Must have training to work with mentally handicapped children.

Mentor

Time: Four hours per week

Description: Skill building and enrichment activities and education, children 5-18 years.

Mentoring Teens
 

Mentors/Tutors: Located at Bugbee Hall. Basic GED instruction. Spanish speaking volunteers highly needed! Evening tutor 7:30-8:30 & any other time!

Opportunities for Otsego
  Center/Classroom Aide:
Assist center staff with any duties, chores, & activities

 Violence Intervention Program
Volunteers  needed  provide assistance to domestic violence and rape crisis victims at the safe shelter.  A 35 hour training course is offered three times a year, call CSRC to learn when the next training is scheduled.

Red Dragon Book Store
 

The Salvation Army
 

Ongoing. The Salvation Army Oneonta Corps on River Street is in need of volunteers to either help by acting as food pantry  or youth activities assistants. The food pantry position involves helping to keep the pantry stocked and packing  food baskets for families from 9:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. Youth assistants will assist with programs that include crafts, recreation, and snacks from 4 p.m. - 6 p.m. on Wednesdays.

Also looking for help with students to teach music and help with instruments!

Saturday's Bread
 

Saturday's Bread, "Oneonta's Premier Soup Kitchen," is looking for volunteers to help on Saturdays from 9:30 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church on Chestnut Street. Volunteers are asked to stay the full amount of time because their service is greatly needed in set-up, food preparation, and cleanup. Volunteer  individually or go with a group of friends.  Call or stop by Alumni Hall 101C before actually going to the soup kitchen. Volunteers must be put on the schedule before going there.

   
Student Disability Services
 

The SDS is in need of people to read books onto a tape and record them for disabled students. They are also looking for note-takers. If interested in note-taking, please email your name, phone number, and course CRN numbers to www.oneonta.edu/development/sds/  The SDS will then contact you if needed. Volunteer hours will show on your transcript.

   
SUNY Admissions
 

Looking for recruitment assistants. Students will start immediately, two- to three-hour shifts are desirable, anytime Monday  - Friday, 7:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.

There are several positions open:

  • data entry

Description: Must be responsible and neat in appearance. Must have fitness background.

Swim Lesson Assistant

2-5 p.m .
Help Water Safety Instructor (WSI). Must like children and swimming and have current life guard certification. One hour of training required.

Maintenance/Cleaning
September -June
M-F, 9 a.m. - 3 p.m.  20 hrs/week
Description: Small maintenance jobs, light lifting, bending, painting.

  Upper Catskill Community Council of Arts (UCCA)

Volunteers needed:

  • greet customers
  • process sales
  • maintain store
  • light cleaning and organizing

Four to six hours on Saturdays 10 a.m. -2 p.m.

   
The Zone Community Center
 

Volunteers needed to mentor local youth in this Richfield Springs community center ( a 45 min. drive, volunteers must have transportation). This includes playing pool, ping pong, video games, cards,  listening and giving feedback to youth they work with. There are special projects that are ongoing. Student volunteers must have the desire to  have fun and to interact with local youth.
