Summer Theater Program: Attention Parents:

The SUNY Oneonta AmeriCorps Summer Theater program will begin on July 5, 2007.  Our selection for the 2007 production is a junior version of the musical “The Wizard of Oz”.  

  Things that you need to know:

8:30 am and pick-up is no later than 4 pm at Alumni Hall. 

  1. Our performances will take place on the stage of the Goodrich Theater.  The performances will be on Friday August 10th in the evening and Saturday August 11th in the afternoon.  The cast party will be on Saturday, August 11th, following the performance.
  2. The participation fee(s) for your child(ren) to attend the Summer Theater Program are listed below. The discount begins after the second child.  We encourage all who are interested in participating to complete the enrollment form below.  To pre-enroll please submit the enrollment form accompanied by a deposit of $100 no later than December 1, 2006. 

Space is limited to 40 participants.

The program will run as follows:

Program Dates:                                  July 5 – August 11, 2007

            Try-out for LEAD parts:           June 18th, 21st & 22nd (time TBA)

 Hours:                                                 8:30 am – 4 pm (9 am – 4 pm programming)

 Performance Dates:                           Friday, August 10th (evening, 7 pm)

                                                            Saturday, August 11th (afternoon, 2 pm)

 Clean up & Cast Party:                       Saturday, August 11th – Following performance     

Attendance:                                         To have a part in the play, children must attend daily.  Consideration is taken for          scheduled camps, vacations, etc. except for the       week of Aug. 6th – 11th.

                                                        Exceptions are very limited for major roles.

AmeriCorps/Rural School Empowerment Program

AmeriCorps is a national initiative signed into law by President Clinton in 1993. There has been an AmeriCorps program at the State University at Oneonta since 1995. Through AmeriCorps, individuals of all backgrounds are addressing the nation's educational, environmental, human and public safety needs though service. Those members from SUNY Oneonta AmeriCorps are making a commitment to provide tutoring and mentoring in local schools.

Part-Time Members providing 900 hours of service over 12 months earn:

  • $5,300 living allowance

  • $2,365.50 Education Award (upon completion)

Part-Time Members positions remaining:  300 - 450 hours of service up to 12 month period:

  • 450 hours - $2,500 Living Allowance

  • $1,250 Education Award (upon completion)

  • 300 hours - $1,750 Living Allowance

  • $1,000 Education Award

  • Also available - 300 hours, education award only in the amount of $1,000

Minimum Qualifications:

  • 17 years old

  • US Citizen or Legal Permanent Resident Alien

  • have a High School diploma, GED or be willing to obtain a GED

The education award can be held in trust for up to seven years and used for:

  • Existing or future loans

  • Attending a qualified institution of higher education

  • Costs accrued in an approved school-to-work program

Mandatory training sessions give Corps Members an opportunity in a safe environment to discuss and challenge each other on issues pertaining to Member development. Some training topics include:

  • American Red Cross CPR/First Aid course

  • NYS Child Abuse/Child Abduction certification and procedures

  • Conflict Resolution

  • Member Development Days

  • Various workshops presented by AmeriCorps Members

  • Code of ethics/professionalism

In addition, background checks and NYSED fingerprinting is required for all participants. While there is no typical AmeriCorps Member, all people selected for the SUNY Oneonta Rural School Empowerment Program/AmeriCorps will demonstrate a commitment to serve, a willingness to use their time and abilities to improve the lives of others, and an interest in learning new skills. Through their service, they will bring to life the AmeriCorps ethic of community and responsibility.
