Some Benefits of the Post Baccalaureate Certificate Programs

Once you complete a Post Baccalaureate Certificate Program in Adolescence Education you will receive New York State Initial Teacher Certification. That is the credential required to teach a specified subject area in all school districts in New York State.

New York State has initial teacher certification and professional teacher certification. After receiving initial teacher certification, one has five years to obtain professional teacher certification. To continue teaching beyond five years in New York State one needs to obtain professional teacher certification. After receiving initial teacher certification in your subject area you have five years to obtain professional teacher certification. To obtain professional teacher certification you have to complete a master's degree in your subject area or in Adolescence Education. If you already possess a master's degree in your subject area, then after completing a Post Baccalaureate Certificate Program in Adolescence Education and earning initial teacher certification in a subject area and working as a teacher for three years you could apply directly to the New York State Education Department for professional teacher certification.

An alternative to the Post Baccalaureate Certificate Program in Adolescence Education is a Master's of Science in Teaching (MST) or a Master's of Arts in Teaching (MAT). These programs provide you with initial teacher certification upon completion. After obtaining an MST or MAT and completing three years of teaching, you can then apply to the New York State Education Department for professional teacher certification.

The Post Baccalaureate Certificate Program in Adolescence Education can be completed in one calendar year if you attend full-time. The tuition charged for this program is undergraduate tuition. After that one year, you can start to teach.

The MST and MAT programs taken on a full-time basis require from two to two and one-half years to complete. The tuition charged for these programs is graduate tuition.  You must wait until you complete the MST or MAT to obtain initial teacher certification and start teaching.  That is two or two and one-half years before you can begin teaching. The MST and MAT programs cost more in tuition and require an additional year or year and one-half during which you must forego earning income.
