Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry

Department of History

Welcome to the website of the Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry at SUNY Oneonta. We pride ourselves on our close working relationship with our students and the ability of those students to gain hands-on experience with the latest chemical research and techniques.

The department has been offering programs approved by the American Chemical Society for over forty years, one of the longest professionally recognized departments on the SUNY Oneonta campus. Our department offers four distinct degree programs; Chemistry B.S., Biochemistry B.S., Chemistry B.A., and Adolescence Education-Chemistry. The Chemistry B.S. degree affords certification by the American Chemical Society and includes coursework in the five primary disciplines in chemistry (inorganic, organic, analytical, physical and biochemistry). The Biochemistry B.S. degree is appropriate for students interested in life science research or medical school. The Chemistry B.A. is intended for students who plan on a career related to the chemical sciences but not involved in performing chemical research. The final major degree available is in Adolescence Education-Chemistry. This degree track is coordinated in close cooperation with the Secondary Education department at SUNY Oneonta and leads to NYS certification for teaching high school chemistry.

Regardless of your general area of interest, we would encourage you to consider chemistry and/or biochemistry and adolescence education as part of your future. The top-flight programs we can offer you here at SUNY Oneonta will serve you well. We invite you to call us or come visit our department at your leisure. Private tours coordinated with a campus Admissions tour are available and we would be pleased to have the Chairperson or any faculty member sit down with you to discuss your options at SUNY Oneonta.
