What is the College Writing Exam (CWE)?

The CWE is a two-part exam that all students are required to take to be eligible to graduate from SUNY Oneonta.

Frequently Asked Questions About the CWE

Q: At what point in my college career should I take the CWE?
A:

The ideal time to take the exam is during the second semester of the sophomore year.

Q:

How do I register for the CWE?
A:

Registration for the CWE is done through Tracktion, our online scheduling service. When you're ready to schedule your appointment to take the exam, please go to https://tracktion.oneonta.edu and click "College Writing Exam." Be sure to fill in all your information. If you need to cancel your appointment, please return to this site to do so.

Q: I'm nervous about the grammar portion of the exam.  How can I study for that?
A:

Grammar is important on both parts of the exam.  Those assessing the writing look at whether it is unified, coherent, developed, but they also are noting whether the writer has demonstrated good command of grammar, punctuation, word choice, and syntax.  If you have concerns, we recommend that you attend our workshop called "Writing Under Pressure." It's offered weekly, and you can sign up for it on the same page where you sign up for the CWE.

Q: How do I find out my score?
A:

Your results will be posted on http://webservices.oneonta.edu. You can also look on your advisement document (arrow sheet).

Q: How long should it take for me to get my results back?
A:

Grading the exams takes approximately 4-6 weeks.

Q: I usually do all my writing on a computer. It will be hard for me to write out an entire essay. Can I type my CWE?
A:

Computer-based tests will be given in our labs in Alumni Hall.  You must register in advance for a spot in the group computer CWE administration.  Dates for computer administrations are listed on Tracktion. When you're ready to schedule your appointment to take the exam, please go to https://tracktion.oneonta.edu and click "College Writing Exam." Be sure to fill in all your information. If you need to cancel your appointment, please return to this site to do so.

Q: What should I bring to the exam?
A:

Bring:

A sweater/sweatshirt
Your ID

Leave at home:

Any drinks/food (not allowed in the testing room)
Flash drives
MP3 players
Personal electronics of any kind

Q: Do I have to write a research paper or cite any sources?
A:

The essay portion of the CWE is an opinion or personal essay. It should not include outside references. It should be completely the student's own words. Students are not permitted to use any other website than Angel during the test, and that is only for the purpose of taking the multiple choice portion of the test.

Q: How are cases of plagiarism detected, and how are they handled?
A: All essays are checked in the Turnitin program, and any cases of plagiarism are reported immediately to the Office of Judicial Affairs.
