SPRING 2017 DROP-IN TUTORING

Finals Week Schedule is posted here

What is it?

This type of tutoring is being made available in PLACE of appointment-based tutoring for the courses for which we get the most requests. At least one tutor is available during drop-in tutoring hours as listed below.

How Does it Work?

Students may stop by anytime during the drop-in hours; however, we strongly recommend that you give yourself at least 1/2 hour to work with a tutor. Please realize that if you get there late and a lot of people got there ahead of you, you may not get the attention you need. Peer tutors will be on hand to work with you and answer your questions and content. You will be encouraged to work in a group of students who are taking the same class, so you can expect to work cooperatively with other students in addition to getting help from the tutor.

You will need to present an ID and your username to sign in and out of tutoring.

Drop-in tutoring works best when you come regularly instead of just before a test.

No appointment-based tutoring for these courses will be available: Accounting courses, Biology 180, 181, 206, Chemistry courses, Economics courses, Physics courses, PSYC 221, PSYC 222, MATH 105, MATH 173, MATH 174, MATH 205, and STAT 101.

What can I do to get the most out of Drop-In Tutoring?

Here are some tips to help you get the most out of our drop-in tutoring services:

  • Tutoring is not homework help -- A tutor’s job is to focus on ensuring that you understand your course material. To ensure academic integrity of both the tutor and tutee, tutors will not work directly on any assignment with a tutee.
  • Introduce yourself -- The front desk assistant will let you know in which room the session you want to attend is being held. When you get to the room, find the tutor(s) -- they wear CADE nametags. Starting off your first session by learning the tutors’ names and letting them learn yours is a great way to begin. It also helps if you let the tutor know what class you are taking and who you are taking it with so they can try to seat you near other people from the same class. Meeting and talking to the other students you meet in drop-in tutoring is an excellent way to form a study group if you don’t already have one.
  • Come regularly -- As with any study habit, it works best if you do it regularly. Don’t try to “cram” just before an exam. Coming regularly allows you to get your questions answered on an on-going basis, and it also helps the tutors learn how to help you best.
  • Come prepared -- Aside from bringing textbooks, notebooks, and class materials, you should review prior to attending so you know where you want to start. Particularly on busy nights, having a prepared list of questions and topics will allow the tutors to make the most of your time.
  • Form a study group -- Study groups can work together both inside and outside of drop-in tutoring to everyone’s benefit. Especially on busy nights, the tutors need to make sure everyone is getting help, but that means that there will be times when they will be helping other people. Study groups can work together to find answers to questions, thus decreasing the demand for the tutor. Study groups are also wonderful ways to prepare prior to a drop-in session as they will allow you to narrow down the number of topics you need help with.
  • See your professor -- Tutoring of any kind is never a replacement for a student working directly with a professor. Tutoring is just one of many resources. PLEASE go to office hours.
