Master of Science (MS) in Lake Management

This degree program is being offered by the Biology Department at the SUNY College at Oneonta and is now accepting applicants for admission in the Fall 2011 semester. Recipients of this degree will meet the requirements to apply for certification as Lake Manager (CLM) by the North American Lake Management Society (NALMS). The 2-year program will include 32 hours of theory, field and laboratory experience as well as thesis research involving the development and implementation of a lake management plan and monitoring of short-term responses. Venues include freshwater watersheds involving invasive species, aquatic weed control, fisheries, and water quality.

The Biological Field Station provides students and faculty with access to state of the art research space, natural resources for field study, transportation, field and laboratory training and technical support, access to field equipment, and office space, etc.

    • 32 hours of course-work including:
      • Biol 625 Lake Monitoring
      • Biol 690 Lake Management
      • Biol 691 Management of the Aquatic Biota
      • Stats 605 Statistics in Research
      • Biol 698 Thesis (12 hrs)
    • Successful completion of thesis research
    • Thesis defense and comprehensive exams
    • Minimum GPA of 3.0

 

Admission Requirements

    • Completed Application Form
    • Personal statement of interest
    • Official GRE General Test scores
    • Official GRE Subject Test in Biology
    • Baccalaureate degree involving coursework as follows*:
      • 20 hrs of biology including:
        • 3 hrs in limnology
        • 3 hrs in another aquatic offering
      • 3 hrs in hydrology
      • 6 hrs in chemistry
      • 3 hrs in physics
      • 3 hrs in statistics
      • 6 hrs in each: communications, business and government
    • Acceptance by the biology graduate faculty

    * Applicants deficient in any of the above offerings may
    be accepted provisionally and enroll in same
