Did We Win The Race?
The impact of government regulations and
professional standards on education
The past decade has seen an increase in the role that government regulations and professional standards play in education. The swelling importance of mandates and accountability started with the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) of 2001, which included historic changes in federal mandates, as well as stringent accountability measures. NCLB and subsequent state laws, including Race To The Top, and regulations gave new life to the accountability movement, which has led to calls for more regulation and greater accountability in many aspects of our lives, including education. Today, government, professional organizations, and accrediting agencies impose strict standards and accountability requirements on schools. These lead to many questions: How have these measures impacted today’s teacher and counselors? How have these measures impacted students? How can teachers and counselors use these standards to improve their practice?
