Men's Basketball (3-0)

Freshmen Kurt Troyer (Albany, N.Y.) and Brendan Twomey (New Windsor, N.Y.) had 19 points and 17 points respectively to lead the Red Dragons to a 94-60 season opening win over SUNY-Purchase in the opening game of the Holiday Inn Classic on the 20th.

The game was close for the first 10 minutes before Oneonta opened it up to lead 46-34 at the break. In the second half the Red Dragons didn't let up as they shot 61 percent from the field for the 34-point victory. Sophomore Adam Cash (Washingtonville, N.Y.) and junior Moe Ricks (Staten Island, N.Y.) rounded out the double digit scorers for the Red Dragons with 17 points and 12 points respectively.

Oneonta State remained undefeated through the first weekend of the season after winning the Holiday Inn Classic 62-60 over Mount St. Mary College. The Red Dragons had to hold on at the end as the Blue Knights made it close down the stretch.

The Red Dragons held the lead throughout the first half and closed with a 13-3 run to hold a 32-18 advantage at the break. Freshman Shawn Bauer (Wallkill, N.Y.) and Cash each had 8 points in the half to lead the Red Dragons who shot 56 percent to 22 percent for the Blue Knights.

In the second half, Oneonta continued to lead by double digits 38-24 after the first five minutes had passed. During the next ten minutes the Blue Knights would begin to make their run, cutting the lead to seven at 49-42. Oneonta continued to lead by seven with 51 seconds left before Mount St. Mary hit a lay-up with 42 seconds to go to make the score 56-52. After a timeout by the Blue Knights, they fouled right away and Oneonta made only one free throw. MSM scored another lay-up off an offensive rebound to make the score 57-54 with 27 seconds left. The two teams exchanged free throws the rest of the way as the Red Dragons prevailed 62-60.

Ricks was selected as the MVP of the tournament and Twomey was selected to the All-Tournament team.

This past Tuesday the men pulled off the biggest early season upset when they came from behind to defeat Cortland 60-59. Marcus Stapleton (Brooklyn, N.Y.) made a steal at halfcourt that Twomey picked up and converted with 11 seconds remaining. That basket proved to be the game-winner as the visitors missed a lay-up and two jumpers in the final 11 seconds.

Oneonta trailed for most of the game and were tied at 16-16 in the first half before Cortland closed the half with a 19-4 run to lead by fifteen points at the break.

In the second half, the Red Dragons battled back with a 22-6 run to take the lead at 42-41. The run was fueled by two three-point baskets by Cash. Oneonta then fell behind 57-50 with just under three minutes to go. Ricks then scored three straight baskets to cut the lead to 57-56. Two free throws by Cortland pushed the lead back to 59-56. An Eddie Taylor (Watervilet, N.Y.) basket pulled Oneonta to within one point before the Stapleton steal and the Twomey basket.

Women's Basketball (1-2)

The women's team opened their season at the Vassar College Tournament on the 19th and 20th. They came away with a split and a third place finish after losing to Vassar and beating Bridgewater State.

In the opening game of the season Oneonta couldn't overcome a poor shooting night as they dropped their game to Vassar 68-59. Junior Paula Polce (Trumansburg, N.Y.) led the Red Dragons with 16 points and 11 rebounds.

Against Bridgewater State in the consolation game, the Red Dragons came from behind to defeat the Bears 77-72. Polce had another strong performance with 22 points and was joined by freshman Amy Comer (Clifton Park, N.Y.) who had 22 points as well. Polce's two game performance erned her All-Tournament honors.

This past Tuesday the women opened their SUNYAC schedule by hosting the conference favorite Cortland in a battle of Red Dragons. The visitors got the best of the home team this time around with a 61-49 win. Cortland led 42-27 at the break and didn't let up in the second half as Oneonta shot only 29 percent from the field for the game. Polce registered another double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds to lead Oneonta.

Wrestling

The Oneonta State wrestling team hosted their annual Invitational on the 20th. The nine schools besides the host who participated in this year's event were; Binghamton University, Cortland, Delaware Valley College, Muhlenberg, New York University, R.I.T., SUNY-Delhi, SUNY-Morrisville and the University of Scranton. No team scores were kept, but individual awards went to the top six wrestlers in each weight class along with an award for most pins and most outstanding wrestler.

Oneonta had two individual winners and six placewinners for the Invitational. Mike Lombardo (Massapequa, N.Y.) not only won at 133 lbs. for the second straight week, but was selected as the Outstanding Wrestler of the Invitational. Mike Longobardi (Bayshore, N.Y.) also won for a second straight week at 157 lbs.

The six placewinners for Oneonta were: Rob Male (Scotia, N.Y.), 6th place, 157 lbs.; Ricky Castriota (Cedarhurst, N.Y.), 4th place, 165 lbs.; Adam Roys (Oxford, N.Y.), 5th place, 165 lbs.; Danny Buonagurio (Ronkonkoma, N.Y.), 5th place, 174 lbs.; Scott DesRosiers (Clay, N.Y.), 5th place, 184 lbs.; Tom Baker (Owego, N.Y.), 2nd place, 197 lbs.

Swimming & Diving

Men (0-5)

Women (3-2)

The swimming & diving teams were at the North Country Invitational on the 19th and 20th. The women placed 5th overall while the men were 9th.

A trio of freshmen led the way on the women's side as Tristen Weaver (Ithaca, N.Y.), Sammantha Cronk (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) and Jenn Tucker (Millwood, N.Y.) each scored in three events each. Weaver was 2nd in the 1,650-yard freestyle, 8th in the 500-yard freestyle and 8th in the 400-yard individual medley. Cronk was 6th in the 100 and 200-yard breaststroke and 7th in the 400 IM. Tucker was 5th in the 100-yard freestyle, 7th in the 50-yard freestyle and 8th in the 200-yard freestyle.

Scoring in two events for the women were freshmen Meghan Savage (Woodside, N.Y.) and Kathleen Horrace (New Windsor, N.Y.) and junior Ronnie Hawley (Binghamton, N.Y.). Savage was 9th in the 200-yard backstroke and 12th in the 100-yard backstroke. Horrace placed 6th in the 100-yard butterfly and 6th in the 50 freestyle. Hawley was 7th in the 100 fly and 4th in the 200-yard butterfly.

Scoring in single events were: Allison Watts (Grand Island, N.Y.) was 11th in the 1-meter diving; Megan Halling (Geneva, N.Y.) was 13th in the 200 breaststroke; Alissa Moskowitz (Plainview, N.Y.) was 7th in the 200 fly; Renee Colombo (Auburn, N.Y.) was 5th in the 1,650 freestyle; Melissa DeBernardo (Mount Sinai, N.Y.) was 12th in the 200 backstroke.

The men only had one individual scorer on the day and that was Justin Martin (Rome, N.Y.) who was 9th in the 1,650 freestyle.
