The inaugural Oneonta Holiday
Inn/ Red Dragon Invitational took place last weekend with nine teams competing
in pool play match-ups. This invitational started the season for many of
the competing teams and allowed some of the regular season opponents to
get their first real look at each other. The teams that got through Friday
evening undefeated were Ithaca College, New York University, and Daemen
College.
Some standout players in
the Oneonta State squads' 3-1 (9-15, 15-8, 15-6, 15-9) win against Oswego
State were: Julie Winnick (Galway, N.Y.) with 10 kills, Jackie Leahy (Mahopac,
N.Y.) with 5 kills, Alison Cross (Hubbardsville, N.Y.) with 15 digs, and
Cristin Leoutsakos (Astoria, N.Y.) with 11 assists. In their 3-1
loss to Ithaca College, Leoutsakos had 9 assists, Lacey Musso (Wading River,
N.Y.) had 6 assists, and Jayme Stewart (Ballston Spa, N.Y.) had 7 kills.
The invitational concluded
Saturday afternoon with three division champions being named. The Ithaca
Bombers clinched the gold medal division with a win over the New York University
Violets. In the silver division the Hunter Hawks edged the Oneonta State
Red Dragons in a five set match to claim the championship. In the bronze
division the Potsdam Bears beat the Oswego State Lakers to take home the
championship. All three of the tournament champions went a perfect 2-0
on Saturday afternoon to claim their respected divisions.

and 29 digs throughout the course of the tournament.
Men's Soccer (2-0)
The men's soccer team defeated
Lafayette this past Saturday 1-0 in overtime. In Saturday's win over
the Leopards, the Red Dragons matched Lafayette shot-for-shot and save-for-save
through regulation time until a cornerkick 3:10 into the first overtime
period led to the only goal of the game. Freshmen James Crofts (Godstone,
England) was trailing Zbigniew Rogalski (Brooklyn, N.Y.) on the kick in
by Allister Wiltshire (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and got his head on the ball and
put it by the keeper on the near post. Oneonta goalkeeper James Riley
(Port Jefferson, N.Y.) registered seven saves to pick up the win and the
shutout.
On Tuesday morning the men's
team was eager to hear that they were ranked 24th in the nation in the
NSCAA poll and ranked 2nd in the Division I New York region. Tuesday afternoon
the Red Dragons had their home opener against the Marist Red Foxes and
shut them out with a 1-0 victory. The first half ended in a scoreless tie
with both teams having sufficient opportunities to score. In the second
half play was much the same as in the first half until senior Orlando Wynter
(Jamaica, NY) made a brilliant pass to senior Ryan Rummery (Biggin Hill,
England) who finished off the play with his first goal of the 2000 season.
Riley played a great game in goal and was tested a couple times in the
second half, but continued to shut the Red Foxes out and lead the Red Dragons
to victory.
Women's Soccer (2-0)
The women's soccer team ran
away with the first official Women's Mayors Cup tournament this past weekend

way with a pair of goals. Freshman Sonada Mujanovic (Centereach, NY) didn't
take long to make her name known by starting the scoring frenzy with a
goal that was followed by goals by senior Liz McGrail (Stamford, NY) and
junior Kristen Henninger (Lake Grove, NY). In the second half freshman
Amanda LaPolla (New Hartford, NY) capped the scoring with a goal that was
assisted by McGrail.

NY) was selected as the Most Outstanding Defensive Player after standing
out on defense over the two-day tournament. Junior Stephanie Poppiti (Seaford,

lost a tough one RPI 6-3. Some highlights of the match were the number
three doubles team of Becky Lane (Binghamton, NY) and freshman Sarah Strauss
(Plainview, NY) defeated Andrea Paquette and Thais Triehy 8-5. In number
