Head Coach - Bill May
Email: MAYWT@oneonta.edu

May will enter his sixth year as the coach of men’s and women’s tennis at Oneonta State in 2009. Last year he guided the women’s program to a 6-6 overall record and a fourth place finish at the SUNYAC championships. In spite of their youthfulness, the 2008-09 Red Dragons had three individuals earn SUNYAC All-Conference honors, including a SUNYAC championship at #2 doubles, and runners-up at #3 and #5 singles.

The men’s team in 2008-09 achieved an overall record of 16-4, and completed a sweep of the NEAC conference in their first year of membership. The Red Dragons won the regular season championship with an undefeated record of 4-0, the NEAC Team Tournament championship with a record of 2-0, and the NEAC Flighted Tournament championship while capturing champions in all nine-flights (6 in singles and 3 in doubles). May was selected NEAC Men’s Tennis Coach of the Year. May has a current overall coaching record at Oneonta State (men’s and women’s tennis combined) of 94-47.

May came to Oneonta after spending three years at Indiana Wesleyan University where he coached the men’s tennis team to a cumulative record of 60-10 including a 19-3 record in 2003. May’s squads also had runner-up finishes at the National Christian College Athletic Association Tennis National Championships in 2003 and 2004. In 2002 and 2003 his team won both the season and tournament championship of the Mid-Central College Conference and he was selected as the Coach of the Year both years.

Prior to IWU May served as the Sports Information Director and men’s and women’s tennis coach at Huntington College for four years. While there he guided the men’s team to the 2000 MCC tournament championship while being selected as the conference Coach of the Year on both the men’s and women’s side. In his first season he was selected as the MCC Coach of the year for men’s tennis. While at Huntington, May received NAIA National Coach of the Year honors for community service (1999) by the United States Tennis Association.

May has coached nine NAIA and NCCAA All-Americans and 20 NAIA and NCCAA Scholar-Athlete All-Americans. He served as the men’s and women’s tennis chair in the MCC and served as the Region VIII chair since 1999. He has guided his teams to five NAIA national championship berths and five top-25 national rankings during his stops at Huntington and IWU.
