Head Coach - Dan Mahar

Mahar enters his second season as a collegiate head coach following a third place SUNYAC finish and the program’s twelfth straight post-season appearance in 2008 in his first season at the helm. The team finished the regular season 7-7 (4-3) earning them a spot in the SUNYAC tournament semifinals against top seeded Cortland State. Mahar was named head coach at his alma mater in June of 2007 after spending several years as an Assistant Coach at Oneonta State, Endicott College and Hartwick College.

As a player Mahar, who transferred from St. Lawrence University in the fall of 1994, was a three-year starter and two-year team captain during his three years as a player. As a senior he helped lead the Red Dragons to its first winning season ever and its first postseason berth.

He was selected as an All-Empire Lacrosse League midfielder while being an alternate for the USILA North/South Senior All-Star game. Mahar was an assistant coach under Jim Nagle in 1999 when the program made its only appearance in the NCAA tournament.

In the fall of 2001, Mahar began an advanced degree program at Endicott College in Massachusetts where he completed a master’s degree in organizational management in August of 2003. While at Endicott he spent the fall season of 2001 and the spring season of 2002 as the defensive coordinator for the men’s lacrosse team. In the fall of 2002 he was named offensive coordinator.

Mahar moved back to Oneonta in January of 2003 where he took a job on campus as a residence hall director. He also became an assistant coach with the Hartwick College men’s lacrosse program, where he stayed for the 2003 and 2004 spring seasons.

Mahar currently resides in Oneonta with his wife Jenn who is also employed by the College, and their two children.

Assistant Coach - Justin Hewlings

Hewlings enters into his third season as assistant men’s lacrosse coach at Oneonta State. He will work primarily with the offensive, man up and goalie units for the Red Dragons.

Hewlings moved to Oneonta in 1999 after relocating from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He maintained an active role in promoting men’s lacrosse as a school sponsored sport at Oneonta H.S. In 2003, he was named to the Section IV Exceptional Senior All Star Team. In 2007, the school district picked up men’s lacrosse as a varsity program after 7 years at the club level. In 2008, the school district added a junior varsity team. Hewlings served as an assistant coach for Oneonta H.S. and Brockport H.S. from 2004-2007.

Hewlings graduated in 2007 from Brockport State with a Bachelor’s Degree in Physical Education and a P-12 Teacher Education Concentration. He served as a midfielder for the men’s lacrosse team at Brockport State. Hewlings is working on his Master’s Degree at Cortland State in Physical Education with a concentration in Coaching Pedagogy. He works full time in the Residence Life Department as a Hall Director at Oneonta State.
Assistant Coach - Adam Johnson
Adam Johnson

Adam Johnson returns to his alma mater in his first season as assistant coach for the Oneonta State men’s lacrosse staff. Johnson will be involved with the Red Dragons defensive unit, while helping with the recruiting process.

As a defender at Oneonta, Johnson was a four-year letter winner and team captain in 2009. Adam was recognized as a two-time SUNYAC All Conference selection in 2008 and 2009, a 2008 SUNYAC All-Tournament Team selection and was also named to the SUNYAC Commissioner’s List for 3 straight years.

Johnson graduated from Oneonta with a Bachelor’s degree in Adolescence Education, with a concentration in Mathematics. Adam will continue his education as a graduate student in the College’s Education Department.

 

Assistant Coach - Jim Peterson

Jim Peterson joins the Red Dragons this year and will be working with the offense.  Peterson recently retired from the U.S. Marine Corps after more than 25 years of service.  Prior to joining Oneonta State he was the coach for Okinawa LC, Ryukyu University and several service teams in Japan. Peterson has a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Strayer University. He lives in Fly Creek with his wife, Myrna, and son, Joe.
