Pre-Enrollment for Art Majors
Pay careful attention to the instructions and deadlines!
Due to the limited number of seats in Art Department classes, it is critical that you participate in the department's pre-enrollment in order to insure that you get the courses you need.
Students who do not participate in this program find themselves closed out of the courses they need. Failure to participate can lead to delayed graduation.
It is important that all students see their advisors to make sure that they are on track to meet graduation requirements.
The process guarantees two ART/CART classes for each student and senior students get higher priority in the process.
KEY DATES AND DEADLINES and OVERVIEW OF THE PROCESS
- Students print their arrow sheet: myOneonta
- Students print the Course Selection form from the web: click here to print the form
If your browser does not display the PDF file correctly when you click on it, try this: right-click the above link and choose "save as" or "save link". Then open it with Adobe Acrobat.
- Students choose five classes from the list and prioritize them 1 to 5 (where 1 is their first choice) in the “Selection Number" column
- Students bring the form and their “arrow” sheet and Course Selection Form to their advisor between 3/6/13 and 3/22/13
- Their advisor will check to ensure the classes chosen by the student are appropriate ones, answers questions, and initials the choices on their form.
- The students take their Course Selection form to the Art office by 10/10 to 10/24
- Students return to the office to pick the signed “registration” form between 4/2 to 4/5
- Students take their form to the registrar between 4/2 to 4/5
This last step is crucial. If students neglect to take this form to the registrar, their registration will not be complete!

Some changes to the Art major have been approved by the college and will go into effect for every student who enrolls in our program after Fall 2012.
If you are already an Art major, you do not have to do anything. But if you change your major, or add the Art major now, you should pay particular attention to the "Change of Major" form. There is a check box where you can specify if you want to add the major with the new or the old requirements.

NEWSWEEK RANKS SUNY ONEONTA #7 NATIONWIDE AMONG BEST COLLEGES FOR ARTISTIC STUDENTS
ONEONTA, N.Y. -- Newsweek magazine has named SUNY Oneonta one of the best colleges in the nation for artistic students. In its 2011 "Best Colleges for You" feature published earlier this week, Newsweek ranks SUNY Oneonta #7 on a list that also includes NYU, Berklee College of Music in Boston, USC and the California University of the Arts.
"Our approach to education in the arts—self-directed study as opposed to requiring students to choose a specialty—no doubt has enhanced our reputation," said SUNY Oneonta Theatre Department Chair Patrice Macaluso. "We're also known for teaching the business side of the arts, which distinguishes us from most peers. It's fantastic to be recognized nationally for these strengths."
Art Department Chair Thomas Sakoulas added that the talent and experience of the faculty and recent facilities upgrades likely played a role in the college's high ranking. "Our professors are also professional artists who lead each area in small classes designed to foster the creative talents of each individual student," said Dr. Sakoulas. "The art studios were recently renovated to accommodate the education of about 300 students who chose majors in the arts."
To develop its lists, Newsweek consulted sources such as the National Center for Education Statistics, the College Board, the Shanghai Ranking Consultancy, and the Sustainable Endowment Institute, among others. Different methodologies were created to evaluate colleges in each category. Across all categories, rankings considered quality of life and education during college, and outcomes after graduation.
