NEWSWEEK RANKS SUNY ONEONTA #7 NATIONWIDE AMONG BEST COLLEGES FOR ARTISTIC STUDENTS
ONEONTA, N.Y. -- Newsweek magazine has named SUNY Oneonta one of the best colleges in the nation for artistic students. In its 2011 "Best Colleges for You" feature published earlier this week, Newsweek ranks SUNY Oneonta #7 on a list that also includes NYU, Berklee College of Music in Boston, USC and the California University of the Arts.
"Our approach to education in the arts—self-directed study as opposed to requiring students to choose a specialty—no doubt has enhanced our reputation," said SUNY Oneonta Theatre Department Chair Patrice Macaluso. "We're also known for teaching the business side of the arts, which distinguishes us from most peers. It's fantastic to be recognized nationally for these strengths."
Art Department Chair Thomas Sakoulas added that the talent and experience of the faculty and recent facilities upgrades likely played a role in the college's high ranking. "Our professors are also professional artists who lead each area in small classes designed to foster the creative talents of each individual student," said Dr. Sakoulas. "The art studios were recently renovated to accommodate the education of about 300 students who chose majors in the arts."
To develop its lists, Newsweek consulted sources such as the National Center for Education Statistics, the College Board, the Shanghai Ranking Consultancy, and the Sustainable Endowment Institute, among others. Different methodologies were created to evaluate colleges in each category. Across all categories, rankings considered quality of life and education during college, and outcomes after graduation.
