In this era of rapid change which continues to be marked by social and economic inequality within our state and nation and within our shrinking, globalized world, people everywhere wonder what can they do to advance justice, equality and address problems whether local or global. People of good will, especially youth do care and do have the energy to tackle many issues. The VISION of the Social Justice Incubator is to bring students, faculty and professionals together in small interdisciplinary teams to brainstorm and problem solve an issue of mutual interest. Through problem solving and action we honor the memory of Dr. Ralph R. Watkins (1943-2007) after whom our Social Justice center is named, a colleague who deeply believed that community is both the people and the place that nurtures knowledge and a multiplicity of perspectives in the practice of change. We, too, believe that our students and youth generally want to contribute to making our world a better one. Analogous to entrepreneurial incubators which support the development of new products or services ‘for profit,’ the Social Justice Incubator encourages the development of new approaches to understanding and tackling issues of injustice in the broadest sense.
Areas of investigation are endless and can include projects as varied as:
* new strategies for tackling sexist or transphobic workplace cultures,
* new processes for advocating for asylum seekers or migrant workers,
* new ways to advocate for and link war wounded in Africa with prosthetic device manufacturers,
* new programs (on or off campus) for facilitating interfaith understanding between religious groups, or
* new mentoring arrangements between university students and local high school students.
As with business incubators, a team could tackle a problem such as toxic waste clean-up or the developing world’s rural residents’ need for batteries, projects that might result in new technology, but the primary objective would not be a patent and profit. The mission of social justice may take many forms: advocacy, education or mentoring, direct service to marginalized communities, locally or globally, e.g., runaways or homeless children are a global phenomenon.
Relationships are the building blocks of the Social Justice Incubator:
*advocacy or problem solving alliances between a few students and faculty;
*science-art, social science-science collaborations among faculty and students;
*partnerships between community based agencies and campus teams; or
* linkages between alumni, current students, and community organizations.
Relationships built on common commitment are the pathway, and these relationships are built on open dialogue, collaboration and inclusivity, not competition. Similarly the social justice ethic demands working with rather than for communities in problem solving and linking creative solutions to social ills with alliances of students, faculty, community residents, alumni and others beyond the college.
